    1911 auto-ordnace help

I just dros this 1911 auto ordnace from a friend for 200 dollars it's a commemorative model commander size, can't find much if any info on the commander AO, I know it's a commemorative and I should not shoot it, but I don't believe in owning a gun I can't shoot, pretty sure it's pre kahr so it does not have a very good track record, what are some suggestions and stuff to replace to make it somewhat of a reliable gun, I know it's not gonna be top shelf but I wanna make it work, I wanna change most of the internals which isn't to hard hammer and sear I think are the hardest part, gonna change out the thumb and grip safety also and mag release, I know it all needs some fitting , stamped west herley,Ny so I know quality is gonna be somewhat of an issue

I'll give you the wishy washy answer - it is easy to change - BUT - you need the "right" parts - think about the fact that all of those parts work together - and anything you change needs to work together. Some minor tweaking may need to be done.

All this assumes the parts fit - for example going to a new grip safety may require quite a bit of tweaking to fit seamlessly - may get drop in parts - but they MAY look drop in -

Most parts aren't too expensive - unless you are "good" - stick to tweaking parts and not the frame

Read - watch YouTube videos - and go for it

Remember slow - and under file everything - you can always take off more, putting metal back is a "little" harder

Save the time and trouble of swapping out the parts. Keep the AO commemorative as it is. Just my .02.

If you want a shooter and don't want to spend a lot, go buy a RIA GI model. Only cost you about $450.

Thats a nice pistol. Dont ruin it.

But yes 1911 parts are either drop in or slight filing, sanding may need to be done. Its hard to say if a part will fit right in. Its certainly not hard and actually fun working on a 1911.

There might be one problem, he was givin the guns by his grandfather who is still living they are not registered is there any wrong doing if we do a transfer at an ffl or does he need to do an oplaw form before transferring it to me?

Doesn't seem right I'm not saying your wrong, but if he goes to the FFl they are just gonna register it to me anyways
