How are some gunsmiths getting bare 1911/2011 frames?

A few of the locals seem to be churning out custom 1911s/2011s built from scratch frames and slides.

I am wondering how they do that. Do they have a relative out of state that sells them frames by the dozen? Or...

Their aluminum frames are really good and I'm buying a couple of steel frames once they are available. Highly recommended!
