    357mag vs 357sig

I have both of these so I was doing some research to discover which one would has the highest Ft/lbs of energy.

So far I am only comparing factory ammo.
    357mag 124g, 1450fps, 584ft/lbs Corbon.
    357sig 115g, 1500fps, 575ft/lbs Corbon.

As far as speed I found 357sig has a Corbon round:
    110g, 1600fps, 564ft/lbs.

I guess as a second gun while hunting wild pig the sig would be a better choice or is it?

I've used my 357 Sig as a backup gun for pig, and it works fine (I've only had to use it for "finishing" though.)

The Sig load was never meant to match the Mag load across all bullet weights. Compare the heavier bullets, and you'll start to see where the Mag shines. (i.e. I would never use a 357 Sig as a primary hunting weapon, but would be comfortable using a heavier Mag as a primary for pig.)

My thought would be what gun you would have perfect confidance in as your hog back up gun, i.e. if that wounded baby is charging at you and you really need your back up to go bang do you trust an auto or a revolver? I am more comfortable with the revolver.

Don't get too caught up in the energy figures. It's the bullet weight that matters much more for penetration and that's more important for hunting. The heavier bullet will have a higher sectional density and result in the ability to penetrate through bone and tissue much more.

The .357 sig would not be a better choice for pig hunting over the mag. The heavier bullet weights, up to 200gr(hardcasts) will offer MUCH more penetration for game animals like hogs than the lighter sig bullets could even come close to.

The SIG is just an overpressured 9mm.... it only matches the mag in off the shelf 124/5 gr PP loads. The mag will take you to the 200gr range while the SIG tops out at 147gr. I had one and was mildly impressed until I got my hands on a G20.

If you want a true magnum autoloader for pig backup check out a 10mm. You can run up to 230gr hardcasts with it. They clock out at @ 1250 in my 6" pipe. The 200gr runs a little over 1400 from the same barrel.
