    Glock 17C and standard 17

So my brother bought a G17 compensated and so far its a Jam-o-matic, would literally malfunction every round unless rapid firing or gripping it abnormally tight, wasnt limp wristing either cause I made sure i wasnt when shooting it and made sure he wasnt, some would FTF some FTE, but most commonly it seemed like the slide wasnt going back far enough to completely pick the round up from the mag like it was getting stuck when the round would go to slide under the extractor claw.

He shot Steel wolf and some of my brass american eagle and Freedomunitions all 115 grain, i shot some +P through it and it cycled, so my first guess was since its compensated it needs a heavier load to properly cycle it, or the recoil spring was too strong and needed to break in so he left the slide locked open over night went out and bought some 124gr rounds and said it only malfunctioned twice (I wasnt there the second time) and he only bought 124 gr for the second time around, my question is

If you were to infact need a heavier load, then wouldnt that be conflicting with the purpose of a compensated gun? Shouldnt it be able to run the usual 115's?

Also as much as i dont want to admit it, my standard G17 was having malfunctions aswell and both of ours didnt wanna lock the slide back on the last round consistently. same with that my guess was maybe the recoil spring was too stiff? But shouldnt glocks be 100% reliable out the box?

Ive shot other glocks with no malfunctions so what gives? Cheap ammo maybe? but either way that should fall back into glocks notorious reliability
Both have around 200 rounds through them, oiled and cleaned before shooting them.

This thread is mostly seeking out help to find a solution to his problem since id imagine you can guess the frustration he had of buying a brand new gun just to not be able to shoot a full mag without problems.

I should add mine was FTF'ing aswell with the slide not locking back and sometimes didnt seem like the round didnt wanna slide under the extractor claw when being pushed into the chamber

I had a G17 that I had quite a few malfunctions with- probably close to 1 out of every 10 rounds with several different magazines. I didn't keep it long enough to figure out what the problem was.

Did you clean it before you first shot it? Maybe the packing grease/oils used were gumming it up

Your points make sense and it is just right to expect reliability from a Glock. Did you have a range officer shoot it for you? Or other folks who are seasoned? If not, maybe try that first and see what they have to say.

If they experience the same issues, then I would highly recommend taking it to a Glock armorer to be safe. You will have peace of mind.

          Good luck!

I have had no problems with either of my G17s, both were already broken in when I got them though.

I have not heard of any problems with quality 115gr ammo causing short stroking in either a G17 or G17C (my friend used to have a G17C). However I have been told by a friend that his G17 would not cycle properly when he started reloading 9mm, drove him crazy until he figured out he was not seating his bullets deep enough to create high enough pressures. After sorting out his setback issue his gun now runs fine with his reloaded 9mm ammo.

I would try different ammo as you noted that the +P rounds cycled properly. Also I am aware that you don't think you are limp wristing the guns but you did note that when you held an "abnormally tight" grip the failures stopped. "Abnormally tight" is subjective so there may be some grip issues that need to be resolved.

As trigger945 pointed out you should have someone who deals with Glocks regularly shoot the guns and/or watch you shooting to see if the problem is user error.

Stop being a pu**y and grip the thing!!!!

Sounds like your having a couple issues dude. It's probably a new gun and the spring is too strong for the cheap stuff. Use quality factory reloads or stronger better stuff. Try leaving he spring compressed for a week. Should help some.

Slide lock back could be the ammo not fully cycling your slide stop to catch but it could also be from your mags. I have 2 mags that need a rebuild cause they either lock back with 1 in the mag still or they don't engage the slide catch on the last round. Had that with the first 3 mags in my Springfield 1911 too when I got it. But it stopped after the 3rd mag. Still not sure if it was the gun or me riding the release.

But since your having issues with the slide not full cycling try compressing the spring and use some better factory ammo for the first few hundred rounds. But yea for the most part they SHOULD be able to run wolf and stuff 100% out of the box.

I'm assuming you guys have newer Gen3s? I know when the gen4 came out and was having all those issues a lot of newer gen3s were too. So look into that more too. I know they fixed the 4 but I'm not sure what the issue was with there 3s or if it was fixed.

                Cleaned it and oiled.

                No range officer, BLM land

Also i shot my same ammo out of a friends g17 he's had for a while and it ran flawless like glocks should, so thats what made me think maybe recoil spring? but even then everyone brags about how they dont need a break in period and are amazing out the box and blah blah blah

And when i say abnormally tight i mean like, stupid tight, clench every muscle from your shoulders to your hands, definitely not a normal grip

Yeah both newer gen 3's my serial number starts with VRA his is W something i believe, not sure if thats any valuable information. Also some brass would fall out and some would go into my face, i know gen4's had the brass to the face problems.

Kinda irritating for me, pretty frustrating for him haha

                  Thats good, solid advise.

My friend has a newer Gen 3 Glock 23 and was running into FTE and stove piping issues when running different personal defense ammo. One of them being Hornady critical defense which surprised me. He didn't run into any issues with multiple brands of basic ball/target ammo. Only thing we could come up with is that the the feed ramp needed to be polished but he still shouldn't have that issue with a brand new glock. We sent it back to Glock and I'm waiting to hear what they say.

my 17c eats everything & has only failed to cycle twice. both time happened when it was new & I let someone else shoot it, they both stove piped. after that I have shot thousands of rounds through it without any issues.

Both of the above paragraphs lead me to believe you are correct in your assumption that it is an issue with the recoil spring tension. As was suggested earlier you can lock the slides open for a few days to try and soften the spring tension. If that doesn't work you might give Glock a call and explain the situation, maybe they will send you lighter recoil springs.

Lots of glock gurus in the internet. If it is too much of a hassle for you to send the pistol to glock usa, find a certified glock armorer in your area preferably with lots of experience. Glock dealers usually have staff members that are sent through the training. Your pistol issues can be easily be diagnosed by them.

more than likely its your spring. do what ck_32 suggested first if that dont work try a lighter spring a #14, in my opinion that is perfect for me at least or a glock armor. buying a lighter spring is still cheaper than a glock armorer

Ill leave the slides locked open for a few days, we're going out again this weekend, i think he bought some more heavier loads im just gonna keep using my Freedomunitions i have left, as far as the ammo im pretty happy, havent had any duds and it seems pretty accurate, but im not sure if the loads are underpowered or the spring is too heavy and causing the malfunctions. I think its just new spring

Bastard, would you say the way you're lubing your gun to be normal? or needing more?

Compensated guns always works better with hotter loads!
Hotter the load heavier the recoil springs.
The light ammo charge equals lighter recoil spring.
