Hi all. Can someone tell me the difference between the model 27 and model 28 hwy patrolman? They look like they are both N frame 357's. Is the difference in the style trigger and hammer/ sights? Also I saw a mdl 27 with the inscription "marcas registradas" where the smith info on the frame is. I think that translats to a trademark but is this a gun made in another country under contract? Any ideas?

Both are N frames.

As I recall, one is more nicely finished, while the 'Highway Patrolman' is the lower cost version. I think the fancier one has some checkering upper strap near sights?

These are all US built guns. "Marcas Registradas <year>" just means "Trademark, <year> and may have something to do back then with protecting design internationally not just in US... I've seen this on other US products too.

I'm waiting for/dreaming of a stainless 627 (or alloy 327) with a 4" barrel, 8 rounds, and unfluted cylinder.

I'd settle for the Lew Horton/Custom Shop 3" w/unfluted 8rd cylinder. That'd "make my day".

BWiese got it. The 28 is the "value" version of the 27. It was aimed (bad pun) at cops who wanted an affordable N frame 357 for duty.

The 27 as the Registered Magnum, used to be the premier gun but as the years went on, the only thing that set it apart from other Smiths is the machined checkering on the topstrap, rear sight and barrel rib.

The M-28 is built heavy. The cylinder on a M-28 is real thick & heavy made like a tank. R.

Damn! That's about like the one I was talking to the custom shop about last Sept/Oct - I'd wanted to convert a 329PD to 8x357 but they'd said the bbl offset was a bit different - and that'd they'd be doing a longer bbl version of the 327 soon, with possible CA/MD/MA approval.

Anyway this is cool but I wish it weren't pimpy 2-tone, and just had a standard lugged bbl on it. And I'd prefer wood Hogue grips without grooves but with endcaps.

But close enough Here it is for others to see.

The 28 is an N frame .357 in 4" or 6" barrel. Finish was matte blue with a small number (maybe 200) in nickel made on special order for cop shops. The Model 27 was the deluxe version of the N frame .357, with polished blue, nickel, checkering on the top strap, target options available, and 3.5, 4, 5, 6, 6.5, and 8.375" barrels. The guns are identical in size and function, only finish and options vary.

For some reason the 28s now rival the much nicer 27s in price on the used market which completely baffles me.

This is a 5" 27-2 made in 1968.
