Beretta 96D questions

Ok so I just bought an old police turn in 96D. I have some questions. 1. Can I do any mods to convert it to D/A and S/A like a standard 96? 2. If I buy a 9mm conversion for it will it accept standard 92 mags or will it need to be modified? Thanks guys.

99% of people can just drop in a 9mm barrel and have it run perfectly. I've two 96 uppers that works on. Others run into extraction issues and prefer to run the whole 9mm slide/barrel combo on their 96 frame.

If I recall correctly: the D needs an FS hammer, a small part to catch the half-cock notch, and an FS or DS slide to be converted. A good place to ask the specific parts to order is beretta forum in the handgun section. It is possible to use the D slide with the FS type hammer, but it provides no safety measures besides the firing pin block (activated by trigger).

The hammer and IIRC the sear are needed for the lower, but the D slide can't be modified (easily at least), as it doesn't have the safety-decock.
Buying a whole slide would probably be prohibitively expensive, such that you'd be better off selling what you have a buying an FS version.
You can change the lower parts, and use D slide, but you will have no safety, and no decock, not a great idea.
92 and 96 frame have the same magwell, so mags will fit back and forth.
