The best concealed carry firearm?

If you could pick any handgun to have as concealed carry (.40 or above caliber), and money was not an issue, what would you choose?

Right now I'm carrying a 9mm S&W Shield, which is "nice", but, as far as something I could depend on with my life, I feel like it leaves much to be desired.

So I ask this, because my firearm knowledge is extremely sub-par compared to 99% of the cal-gunners on here, and i'd really like to find an amazing concealed carry gun that will last me a long time and perform well.

This question gets asked over and over again.

If you have a get-out-of-jail-free card, the answer is anything that carries and shoots well for you. For some, that may be full-sized, big-bore hand cannon. For others, that may be a plastic-framed, sub-caliber pocket pistol.

If you’re stuck in a part of California where you’re limited to undocumented concealed carry, then you’ll probably have to go with the latter.

I'm a fan of Glocks, but their sub-compacts are too fat. When is Glock going to get the message and release slender, "micro" versions of their subs?

I carry a S&W 442 either in my pocket or owb. If I had the money, I'd get another one and lotsa ammo.

The very premise of your question is flawed. ".40 or above caliber" belies your sub-par / dated knowledge. No worries - educate! Check out:

For me its my Walther PPS. In the past I have carried a Glock 30, Kahr PM 9 and a M&P 40C, but I have found the PPS to be the best all around carry gun when you take into consideration its concealabilty, ergonomics, reliability and accuracy. It looks awesome to.

Depends. For me I never really consider capacity to be all that much of a concern in a carry gun. 5 round capacity as a minimum, but most SD situations are resolved in 3 rounds or less. I do always carry two reloads as a precaution.

Currently my carry line-up consists of a Ruger LCP and a S&W Shield 9mm. Both are great for their purposes. I did just pick up a Glock 36 as a winter carry gun, as I wanted something with a little more power behind it for dealing with the heavier clothing associated with cold weather.

LCP is the perfect gun to always have on you. There is no excuse to leave home without a gun when it comfortably fits in a pocket. I would say the Shield is one of the best carry guns on the market. 9mm (adequate stopping power for self defense), slim so it is easy to conceal in almost any attire. Capacity, 7+1 with a flush mag which more than meets my requirements and should be more than enough to disable a lone assailant. And it has one of the best triggers out of all the current single stack 9s on the market.

I would really like to know what you dislike about the shield. The only negative I give that gun is the manual safety, which is something I completely despise on a self-defense weapon, but I have been served well by just ignoring it and leaving it off.
