Blackhawk 357 conversion to 9mm

Years ago I heard you can convert a Ruger Blackhawk .357 to shoot 9mm, is this possible? I'm guessing you would have to send it to ruger to get a 9mm conversion done.

I purchased two Ruger Blackhawk .357/9mm Convertibles this past year.
All three calibers shoot accurately. .38/.357 & 9mm on my two rugers in 4 5/8th inch and 6 1/2 inch barrels.

If you have a Blackhawk Convertible with extra 9mm cylider, yes. I have a lot of fun with mine but 9mm is not the bargin it used to be.

Bought 6 1/2" .357/9mm convertible a few years ago. I like the Blackhawk platform, and its a nice gun, but have never really gotten into it. I'm thinking of turning it into some type of project gun, have the barrel changed to a 4 5/8, or will sell it.

I have a Blackhawk in 357 and it's an amazing gun. With the Hornady 140 gr LeverEvolution ammo it's extremely accurate.

Anyone know where I can purchase a 9mm cylinder for it and what are the current prices?

Going to Ruger and having it done is your best bet it might cost a little more than you like but it will be done right and keep your warranty. The thing is you just can't buy a 9mm cyl and through it in there is things that could go wrong that could hurt the gun and you.

Sorry, but that's just wrong. Yes, you can buy just a 9mm cylinder. If you can find one. The gun was designed to do just that. Swap out the rimmed cylinder (.38/.357) and swap in the rimless. (9mm) That's why you can buy a Blackhawk convertible. You probably have to check GunBroker for just a cylinder. Or contact Ruger and ask if they still sell them separately. I sold mine to my best friends' dad for his first gun purchase. Stil has it.

Thanks for the info, it seems that 9mm is more available now than .38's. I want to be able to shoot different types of ammo in case there is another ammo draught.

I believe the convertible cylinders need to be fitted at the factory.
My two came with the pistols and have 3-digit matching nbrs stamped on the cylinders that match the last 3-digit of the pistol frame serial number.

Yes your right you can buy a cylinder but will the timing be right to match the chamber to the forcing cone, will the distance between the chamber and the forcing cone be within specs so there won't be lots of blow back, will the cylinder even fit it could be to tight which could be ok just file a little at a time until it fits but if it's to loose you can't add metal to make it fit.

I had 4 single sixes at one time 3 old models and 1 new and not all cylinders would fit each gun some were loose and some would not even go into another gun. Again you can buy a cylinder but I would still take the gun to a smith to make sure it will function right. You can try asking here http://www.rugerforum.com/phpBB3/

Call Ruger in Newport, NH at 603 865-2442. I saw on the Ruger Forum a member sent his blackhawk in for a new cyl.
It was about $80 for the new cylinder and $85 for labor fitting the cylinder to the frame.

My apologies to redhemi. This is why I don't like typing on forums. Your second post is absolutely correct. I felt your first post was rather vague in detail and read it to be that trying to convert calibers required major work. What's thought in the head doesn't always reach the fingers. All your added points are valid and correct. That's the difference between general and specific comments. I think we were both speaking generally at first.
