You guys ever try to use bear spay in the wind or rain or -20F? Let me know how that works out for you. Bears only live in sunny warm areas, right? For brown or polar bears the best use for spray is to spray yourself in the face so you don't have to watch the bear eat you.Comment

Canadians do not have the right to own guns. They do not have something akin to the 2nd Amendment which defines gun ownership as a "right." They own firearms as a privilege granted by the government. It can be rescinded by the government at any time of its choosing.Comment

Wonder how good a 7.62x54r would work on that? I imagine, especially if steel-cored mil-surp, it'd drop the bear pretty damn fast.Originally posted by DRHI think Claire Wolf said it best as "America is at that awkward stage. It's too late to work within the system, but too early to shoot the bastards."Originally posted by KestryllSeriously??
Have you looked around?

In the article, two people got mauled. The lady and the guy who tried to fend if off with a shovel (A spear would have worked maybe!). Then as an aftermath, there were two mauled people in the hospital TWO dead polar bears and an orhpaned cub to deal with. If the good Samaritan(s) had shot the bear, then only one person would be in the hospital, maybe with lesser wounds, ONE bear would be dead and the orphaned cub may or may not have been orphaned, depending on which bear was it's mother.
Also killing and stopping are two different things. For a bear, you really have to kill it to stop it and you have to stop it immediately because ... it's a bear and it's going to eat you.
I'm thinking a cross bow bolt or an arrow might work for penetration and killing power IF it's not charging you, and you are a good archer and maybe if you are hiding.
An SKS would probably make a really good anti-bear gun. It's maneuverable, shoots 10 fat bullets quickly and it's likely got a bayonet on it for after you've missed all 10 shots!
Best thing is, of course, to stay away from fricken bears. But if one is killing a person on your front lawn, you should have SOMETHING. Heck, hit it with your car!==================

Remember to dial 1 before 911.
Forget about stopping power. If you can't hit it, you can't stop it.

300 mag /30-06/ 12 guage/ 44mag in that order subject to proficiency, nerve, and luck. Rermember folks, an M1 garand was a basic rifle for marines in ww2. Also humans arn't bears. Humans have about one eigth the power pound for pound. Bear mace isn't bad either, if that's your comfort level, and most frontal charges are faints. So good luck to all. In my case, I have known a man killed by a bear.Comment

Crackers and whistlers for bird control. I don't think I would try it on a bear.
