My step-dad told me he wants to give me his 6" 357 stainless Colt Python. I don't know nearly as much as I should when it comes to revolvers. Gurus on revolvers chime in?

What's to know? Never say no to a free gun from a legal source. Especially a Colt Python. Very nice he asked you vs just selling it.sigpicComment

I'm sure you're just gloating, because you've just been handed a Holy Grail..and not that crappy wooden one from Indiana Jones!
So quick guide ...
- You can use .357 Magnum and .38 specials in your new revolver
- DON'T spin the cylinder like the movies. See that "drag line" around the bolt stops? (the indentations near the back of the cylinder, you'll see that a little thingy sticks into them after the cylinder rotates, to keep the cylinder locked in place for shooting) it will get worse if you spin the cylinder. Not sure if this is true for Pythons.
- Don't flip open the cylinder, spin it then slam it back, or flip it back into the gun, like in the movies. This can damage the gun.
- Be careful where you put your hands/fingers. The front of the cylinder sits close to the "forcing cone" which is the start of the barrel. Hot gasses will fly out of that gap, out to the sides so you do NOT want your hands/fingers anywhere near that! ie; keep body parts behind the cylinder gap!
- Treat it nicely, it's a keeper for you to hand down to your own kids.
So basically, whatever they do in movies ... don't do that.
What else ... um, well, you can pull the trigger and the cylinder will turn and the hammer will be pulled back an then then the gun will fire. OR you can thumb back the hammer manually and when you pull the trigger, it will be much lighter. This is the difference between shooting double action vs single action.
Not sure what else to 'school you" on revolvers. Keep it rust free, and clean out the cylinders after shooting it.

lead waster answered pretty much what I needed to know. I had no idea spinning the cylinder or snapping it back in was bad. glad he mentioned that as it probably would have been the first thing I did.Retired AccountComment
