Would you mind showing pictures, I would like to compare my current blended magwell on my GRP Recon. It looks a bit rough to me (when compared to my T3, and other magwells from say Alchemy), but I wanted to get some other opinions before I called customer service in case I was just being too picky. The current mods on it look pretty awesome though.

Does anyone else have blended Nighthawk magwells?

Aesthetically, one of the first things I notice in a semi-custom is the fit, blend and contour of the grip safety and magwell, and for the price of GRP, that's simply unacceptable.Comment

With a one-piece magwell that sometimes happens due to tolerance stacking. A grip-frame that's on the short end of the spec plus a magwell on the long end of the spec=gap. There's little that can be done without employing a welder to my knowledge.
Dave Severns usually recommends two-piece magwells as you can machine the MSH portion of the magwell to match your grip frame length exactly."You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."
"What we get away with isn't usually the same as what's good for us"
"An extended slide stop is the second most useless part you can put on a 1911"
"While Ruger DA revolvers may be built like a tank, they have the aesthetics of one also,
although I suppose there are a few tanks which I owe an apology to for that remark"Comment

OH HELL NO!

Give them a call and send the pics...it will be interesting to see what they do.
Good luck!Last edited by ptusa; 10-22-2013, 9:17 AM.Comment

Considering the price of NHC's, lead time and reputation for quality, I'd say that's not quite up to par.
I don't have any gap and the blend is what I'd expect from them. Pic isn't the greatest, but you can see the attention to detail/fit. Very smooth to the touch all the way around as well.

That's what happened with my magwell blending job. It's just kind of odd for Nighthawk to have this kind of issue since both the magwell and frame are manufactured in house.
Any 2 piece magwells you recommend?Comment

Hey Guys, so I got off the phone with Bill earlier and he mentioned that I reach out to Craig (the owner) to see what he thought about the blend. Bill thought it was not perfect, but it was acceptable. He also said that I was trying to get a perfect gun and that is just very hard to come by; and that sometimes the tolerances aren't exactly perfect on the blends. Again I kindly disagreed, especially since I paid for it to not only be blended on the frame, but also another good amount to have the frame re-coated because of that ... (magwell installation / blend / frame recoat was around $420).
I also told him that I have seen falcon magwells fit a lot better, Not to mention custom mag blend jobs from Wilson or Alchemy Custom and so forth. We chatted a bit more and I thanked him for his time (he is always tries his best with me even though I am really picky) I emailed Craig after the call and awaited his response.
Craig got back to me a couple hours later and apologized for my inconvenience and for the blend. but it was predictable because they accidentally overlooked the fact that the GRP Recon is already beveled and contoured for carry. And because of that, there was no way to add an extended magwell from them that would fit the gap in the frame from the material they removed. He then apologized again and admitted that he once made that mistake too for a customer.
So he offered a solution:
"bring the pistol back in, remove the extended magazine well, credit your account and put on the GRP Mainspring Housing, we will be happy to issue you a shipping tag so that you are not out any expense on this."
He told me to get back to him or Bill when I made the decision and that they will fix it up, and told me that he really appreciated my business.
So I am thinking I will probably send back in the pistol and get a credit on the work. Or maybe I will ask for a discount on it if it saves me from having to send it in again. But either way, thanks again for your time, help and opinions guys.
I feel a lot better about Craigs response, and that I am glad he recognized that it shouldn't have come out that way, at least without telling me.Last edited by davidwow; 10-22-2013, 11:15 PM.Comment
