Question For My First Gun

i am planning to buy a G26 sometime soon and i had a few questions

1. what does DROS mean for me buying my first gun
2. if i also live in NV and have a NV ID can i just buy it from there to avoid DROS?

DROS is the background check it costs 25 bucks, in CA its 10 days (not sure about nevada's wait) and you need ID and some sort of proof of residency for a handgun, Car REG, utility bill, etc. And you have to have a handgun safety certificate which is another 20-30 depending on where you go and you can get one on the spot.

DROS (Dealer Record Of Sale) is the record of sale and process that is required by California law. When you purchase a firearm from or through a dealer in California, you fill out a DROS form and the dealer sends it to Sacramento where a criminal background check is conducted. The 10 day wait is described as a “cooling off period”, so that no one in California can purchase a gun during a “heat of passion” moment.

If you are a resident of another state, you can of course purchase a firearm in that state. If you then move to California and bring your firearm into California, you must register it with California as a personal handgun importer.

The following is a direct cut and paste from the California DOJ web site.

"I am moving into California and I own several handguns. What are the new-resident registration requirements?"

"You are considered to be a personal handgun importer as defined by California law. You may bring all of your otherwise California-legal firearms with you, but you must report all of your handguns to the DOJ within 60 days as required utilizing the New Resident Handgun Ownership Report, pdf. You are not required to report rifles or shotguns. You may not bring ammunition feeding devices with a capacity greater than ten rounds, machine guns, or assault weapons into California."

I am pretty sure if you bring the firearm here to California, because you live here also, you will need to register it.
You can do that on a form you can get off the DOJ website and send it in with your $19.

I live in NV and CA. I buy guns here in NV with my DL & CCW, no wait. Private sales too, although I can buy from FFL with no wait I only bring guns into CA when coming to stay or visit, except for a rifle I sold. Then again I'm never in California for more than two weeks at a time.

That being said, your selection is better in NV (no roster), and there are more good deals. You can also get transfers in for low prices and only pay like $20-25 for the transfer and no sales tax from online retail purchases.

Plus you can buy private sale, and provide no paper trail for the .gov to follow. If you're in state for less than 60 days, I'm not so sure to need to fill out anything, especially if you usually have a different firearm with you every time.

What I'm trying to say is, California sucks when it comes to firearms. Why put yourself through any more California BS than you have to? As long as it's legal, it's all good.

Now - - to change the subject a bit. Are you really sure you want to a Glock 26 for you first handgun? It is not my intention to start a brand war, more a size war, but I have several Glocks, a model 26 being one. From my perspective, the 26 it is too small and “clunky” feeling. I much prefer my model 19 for CCW, and my 17 or 34 for range use.

Unless you need a “deep” cover CCW gun give serious consideration to one of the medium size frame Glocks.

I can just about guarantee you that a 19 will conceal just as easy as a 26, and will most certainly be a better all around gun.

thanks guys! so i can legally buy my gun in NV and come back to CA with it? and if i have to register it isnt that pretty much the same as buying it here with DROS and leaves a paper trail for the gov? sorry if these are common sense questions but its pretty confusing lol

idk i just figured since the limit in CA is 10 rounds i might as well just get a G26 and if i ever by some miracle got a ccw thats what i'd be using.

Smaller does not necessarily equate to better. I suspect most shooters would do better with 10 rounds out of a 19, as opposed to 10 rounds out of a 26.

You have Nevada ID and also live there, why bother to register your gun ? A registration is paper trail for government. You only need to register when you moved permanently to California.

The G19 didn't even feel right so I bought the original full size, a G17, fits great.

i must have misread i thought that since i live in both places i'd have to register it when coming back to CA. if you buy a gun in CA and have to do DROS isnt that a paper trail that says you bought and own a gun?
