    Shoot till it breaks?

Do you guys shoot your guns until there's a part failure? For example trigger return spring breakage or worn recoil spring causing malfunctions. Or do you replace parts as preventative maintenance?

I replace. I don't see the need to invite a tool to malfunction. Especially one that makes big bangs and houses explosions.

You don't really want to shoot it till it fails.

One failed part will often break another that wasn't going to fail yet.

Besides, how much do you plan to shoot? Most modern guns have maintence only every 5k rounds or do...

Trying to make it to 10K without any parts replacement.

Depends on the part, I don't replace everything as preventive maintenance.
I used to change recoil and mag springs once a year in my IPSC pistol, that's 20k rounds interval. Everything else is run it till is seems worn or fails. When I took it all apart to get the frame hardchromed, I did replace the trigger and disconnector springs

failed parts in my 100k+ round CZ-75b
            -slide stops last about 15k
-broke a hammer pivot pin at 60k or so
-broke three rear sights in two years, then never again

that gun was lucky to get a quick cleaning every 2k rounds
If it was a carry gun, I would never rack up enough miles on it to wear parts out

You don't want to shoot until failure, especially if you rely on the gun for self defense.

I'm no where near failure in any of my guns. But yea I would. Unless I see something in a basic visual inspection or cleaning I'll replace it.

If I see it about to break ill charge it so it doesn't break other things when it finally goes. I've seen pistons, rings and rods go in cars and oh man can small stuff cause a LOT I mean a LOT of damage.

i inspect but never remove a part that is functioning properly just because of its age or use level

10k? I'm well past that with no failed parts.

I don't see how you could know a part was going to fail, unless you were doing something like MPI testing before every shoot.

Do your maintenance as recommended by the mfr & do regular, thorough cleanings, so that you maximize your chances of noticing a hairline crack or excessively worn part before it gets to be a problem, and replace.

Other than that, if something goes, there's no way to know in advance.

If I notice something needs to be replaced, I just do it. So far I have only had one part break unexpectedly while shooting and that was on a Marlin Model 60.

While not "broken" worn recoil springs need to be replaced.

I've had a couple of revolver hands replaced. The guns were still functioning but were a bit out of time.

                            Other than that, no.

I noticed most guns minus 1911's recommend recoil spring replacement at 5K and all springs at 20K.
