I think I want a shield 9 or 40 for a carry weapon. right now I use a ppk, while I feel like James Bond it is just a little heavy. Are they worth it?

Shield worth it?
America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.

Yes, the Shield is one of only a few guns in that size toting a beefier 9mm or 40 cal round that is still reliable enough to bet your life on. I personally would have zero hesitation in carrying one."The very atmosphere of firearms anywhere and everywhere restrains evil interference - they deserve a place of honor with all that's good"

I've carried my SSE Shield 9mm 7+1 for close to a year now, it replaced my now seldom carried Sig Sauer .380 P238 6+1. To date with 300 +- rounds fired, the Shield has been totally reliable. When I first bought the Sig new, it had enough FTF and FTE problems to be sent back to Sig for warranty repair work and since received back it has been trouble free but in the back of my mind there's always that thought of another malfunction at the wrong time. I could have bought both a Shield in .40cal and 9mm for not much more than the cost of the P238...Comment

I just went through this decision. Looking at the pros and cons of weapons of choice for a new carry. Currently carrying a 1911 that I love but has become somewhat to heavy. Choices in a price range that was reasonable for me was a LC9, Sheild, KAHR, Glock and some others. Found a store that had all all the major choices in stock and played touchy feeley, side by side comparison with each. Surprisingly enough a S&W M&P 9C was a choice not even considered that won over the Shield because of the price and not being that much larger and more user friendly options and price.
Went in really wanting the Ruger but OMG that trigger!!! Sheild was a really nice gun but lacks some whistles and bells for the price. Was not willing to pay a supply and demand price for a less than what it should be gun. JMOHead Pooper Scooper at the Dirty Dog RanchComment

I love my M&P9 and was planning to pick up a Shield to match but I shoot lefty and the Shield is non ambidextrous. After searching around for the past few months I decided on the Beretta Nano and love it. Definitely worth checking out.Comment

Is the Shield is worth it?
Yes, it's slimmer than a G26, but a step down in capacity and your NS options are limited. If they ever release Trijiicon HD's for the Shield, I'll immediately shut the hell up. Others will point to statistics to justify a capacity decrease... Hell, in that case, I'd rather carry a J-frame. It's a true pocket gun and disappears in shorts & tee shirt. I consider the Shield a compromise of sorts.

I think the Shield is a great choice but if you aren't exempt and have a hard time finding someone to SSE the 9c is worth the look too.
