    hunting with sidearm

I'm pretty sure I know the answer but just want to double check.

I am unsure if I want to open carry while hunting as the holster I have sits a bit high, and isnt the most comfortable thing, especially if I'm carrying gear and a rifle over my shoulder. Can I toss the gun (unloaded) in my camelbak and lock the zippers together with a small combo lock? And be about my merry way?

Yes you can but what's the point of having it if its not loaded and accessible

mount a holster to your camel back shoulder holster style.
Open Carry and available and out of the way.

I use a drop leg holster when I'm hunting. What's the point if having a side arm if it isn't available when you need it most? You might get more responses if you re post your thread in the hunting section.

I was under the impression that you could carry a loaded concealed handgun when you were hunting or fishing, provided shooting was allowed where you were doing it. And IIRC, there is even a provision that allowed you to carry a concealed, loaded handgun while going to and from hunting and fishing. Am I misremembering here? I think the only times you aren't allowed to do so is during archery/muzzle-loading deer seasons, when you are not allowed to carry a pistol that is legally capable of taking taking big game. Which basically translated to no centerfire handguns. Rimfires, caplocks, and other handguns are still allowed simply because they are not specifically forbidden.

Check the hunting regs. In my home state you could only carry a handgun that was legal for use on the game you were after. Like if you were deer hunting, carrying a 9mm was illegal because it's not allowed for deer hunting.

While hunting/fishing, it can be loaded and concealed.

While traveling to and from hunting/fishing site, it can be concealed but needs to be unloaded.

                  ^^^ This.

If you're hunting, you don't need to lock your backpack AND you can load it.

                        Some things to understand:

*If you are hunting and carrying a handgun you need to have hollow point ammo in the handgun. Don't even have any FMJ's in your possession
*You can have it loaded and open carry or conceal carry while you hunt
*Understand the legal calibers to shoot game. Example: Don't try to shoot a pig with your 9mm

If you post in the hunting/fishing section you'll probably get most people telling you not to worry about carrying a sidearm while hunting but I am in favor of it. Too many back woods pot growers and illegals out there.

Have you hunted before? Does anyone else in your party take a handgun hunting? If you are talking, duck hunting for example, that would be the craziest thing I have ever heard.

HP in 10mm? I thought 220 grain hard cast was the right tool for the job when hunting.
