i was looking for some thoughts and or input for my next gun this is not a caliber debate so please don't make it one that being said here i go. so i have been looking at buying an XD. was looking at the 9mm but then i found you can get a 40 and the conversion barrels to run 357 sig and 9 mm. at this point im leaning towards the 40 cuz with the other barrels its like buying 3 guns in one i also could shoot what ever ammo i find instead of being limited to only one caliber as with the 9mm your limited to just 9mm. any thoughts?

Get the 40. Its a great gun. I have a SIG p229 in 357 SIG with the 40 barrel. Its really nice being able to shoot whatever ammo is available. If you really want to have a lot of caliber choices the Glock 20sf is an even better choice. It can be converted to I believe 4 different calibers. I'm not trying to talk you into a different gun. I have an XD 40 and really like it. I just thought you would like some options."Suck on my machine gun" (Ted Nugent)

Good idea done my many others. i went and tested a glock last Thursday , i wasn't to thrilled with it. i have had the same experience with all of the glocks that i have shot they just don't fit me well. so when i was at the range my buddy who was with me saw how i wasn't really enjoying the gun he handed me his xd40 told me to try that instead. it was a perfect fit for me so that's why in going with an xd instead of the glockGet the 40. Its a great gun. I have a SIG p229 in 357 SIG with the 40 barrel. Its really nice being able to shoot whatever ammo is available. Not sure if it's the same for the XD, but for the M&P 40, you can use it with factory 9mm and 357sig barrels. Factory barrels are not terribly expensive from Midway either, under $100.Comment

Yep I prefer the XD9 4". I know that isn't what you asked, just throwing it out there.Comment

XD 9mm 4" Service is one of my absolute favorite pistols I own… good size, feels great, and I shoot it very well.
As long as you can find good prices on them, I prefer just owning more than one, or multiple calibers vs having replacement barrels. I know it increases the cost, but I like owning multiples of a gun a really like.ExtremeXComment

I have a XD 9 service. Looking back I would have done what your thinking and bought a xd 40 with conversion barrel. Best of both worlds. And yes the 40 mags will shoot 9mm (just be sure to only load ten). Or you can buy 9mm mags if your paranoid. To me the most important aspect of a combat pistol is reliability. When you start changing barrels you risk hindering the reliability of the tool.
Therefore I've never been a fan of barrel changes. I'd rather just have guns in different calibers than caliber conversions.Chris

i've got a xd9 service model (4") that i absolutely love. dead accurate out of the box. only thing i didn't like about it was that my wife loved it too, and then stole it from me. i then purchased a xd45 compact for my side of the bed. just as accurate as my 9 and the kick is not nearly bad as i thought it'd be. my brother has the xd40 that he loves. it shoots just as well as my two, the 40 just isn't a caliber that i enjoy shooting. i'm not entirely sure why.
you really can't go wrong with any of them. i've always been on the fence with barrel conversions. plus is that you can have 3-4 guns at the cost of about 2 of them if you get each barrel. there's no dros or wait period on the extra barrels. downside is the SLIGHT inconvenience of having to switch back and forth. thats not a huge deal, but if you're shooting a lot the barrel and internals will heat up, meaning you need to let it cool or wear gloves when you break down to swap barrels. i'd rather just put one down and pick up the next.I don't own any guns...they're dangerous.

For me, I prefer the 9mm for cost effectiveness. And, modern 9mm self defense ammo has proven to be more effective now than it used to be.
If I want to spend more, I shoot my P220. 40 cal fluctuates in price, 9mm stays pretty cheap and 9mm hollowpoints get the job done if needed for home defense.Comment
