Kimber 1911 magwell

Anyone recommend a good magwell for a Kimber TLE. Im looking for somthing to drop in and not the one attached to the mainspring housing. Unless you guys recommend getting the one with attached to the mainspring housing.

My 2nd question, do any of these parts I switch out need to be done by qunsmith? For example if I wanted to switch out the safety selector.

No need to hire a smith if you are competent enough to do a web search, look up how-to videos, follow instructions and use simple tools.

I have a Wilson "drop in" magwell, it hooks onto the grip bushings (whatever the thing is you screw the grips to the frame with).

However, you might need to make a relief cut to the back of the grips. I use hogue rubber grips, so I didn't bother relieving the grip, since it's rubbery and you can't really tell. On a wooden/plastic grip, the magwell parts would make the grip stick out.

Kimber's own mainspring housing (MSH) with mag-well installed without additional fitting in two of my Kimbers. You can use the internals from the original MSH to install into the new MSH/Magwell model.

The Smith & Alexander one-piece is nice, but did require additional filing of the MSH's "ears" to maintain the grip safety at a proper setting. I have one of these, too, but installed it on another 1911.

Since the Series II firing pin safety system is actuated by the grip safety, proper fitting of the mainspring housing to grip safety is very important.

I would highly recommend the Smith and Alexander magwells. Switching out the mainspring housing is not hard and only takes a few minutes!

I like Smith & Alexander, but then again I also like the arched mainspring housing which somewhat limits my choices in mag wells to the Smith & Alexander.

I have had some that fit perfectly with no fitting & others that have required a trip to the smith - the issue is that some of the holes for the pin is too high or low, be it on the frame or the mainspring housing that is up to debate.
I have also used a couple of the Fusion ones with a removable mag-well with the same luck with fitment as the S&A ones.

if you want a mag-well to truly fit properly you are going to have to have it actually fitted to your gun.

Kimber or Ed Brown ones should work without much fitting.

I currently have Ed Brown MSH on my Kimber.

I like the S&A one piece magwell. Its an easy fit for the 1911 and is relatively cheap compared to some others out there. The S&A works well also as it continues the line down from the MSH to the bottom of the magwell which I tend to like. I have one installed on one of my Wilson combat 1911s. On another I have the WC bulletproof magwell but that runs $130 compared to $75 for the S&A. Both may require a little fitting as stated by Bastard. Both do the same job, but both have different look. All depends on the look you are going for.
