    HK Mark 23

I have an HK Mark 23 that I legally own and is legally registered in my name. I've been contemplating selling it lately but have a concern that I'm not 100% sure about. When DROS'ing it, I did so with a de-threaded spare, non-original, barrel. I no longer own this dethreaded barrel and only own all the original parts and keep it disassembled in my safe so as not to infringe upon the law in any way, shape or form.

If I were to sell this piece, would I have to buy another spare barrel and get it de-threaded in order to do so? Or could I sell it/transfer it to an individual without the original threaded barrel installed and just give the buyer the barrel separately so that it does not ever have to be assembled into an "evil assault weapon"?

Thank you in advance for any insight!

Sell disassembled, advise buyer how to stay legal.

Either have the barrel dethreaded or buy an aftermarket barrel and do not install the original while in CA.

Sell it to out of CA buyer.

      What date code is it?

OK perfect, that's the answer I was hoping for. Thanks a lot for the feedback! I'm usually pretty up-to-date on what I can and can't do, but this is obviously a little bit more of a unique situation, or at least a new one on me that I don't anticipate having to encounter again.

The only reason I never hung on to the dethreaded barrel is because I never intended to shoot my Mark 23. I was fortunate enough to get one NIB with everything from the factory that was a 2nd year of production model and it is one of the first 2500 or so made. I just got it and tucked it away considering it was an early model variant.

Seainc: I'm too lazy to go look in the safe right now being that it's past my bed time, but I'm pretty sure it's a KH date code that was made early in the second year of production considering the low serial number (<3500 and they started at 1000)

You will have to sell it face to face PPT since you are just transferring the frame to comply with selling a non roster handgun.

Or sell it to an out of state buyer as the other poster mentioned.

Given the Nguyen case matter, one improves one's situation when drama occurs when compliance parts are at least possessed.

While situation is readily defendable, having compliance parts helps stop the legal dance far earlier if some drama + collection of
dumb cops + antigun DA occurs. (Unlike Nguyen, you DO have the ability to testify in your behalf of your legal intent.)

If PPTing to a Californian, I would include (and obtain signature) of a "don't install this threaded barrel within CA ....." letter to
the buyer, along with advice to him to purchase a compliance barrel.

Try a "safe handling" demonstration with it disassembled.....lol. Should be able to transfer the frame only.

So in CA we can PPT handgun frame only?

Thanks for all the help guys. I'm still toying with the idea of selling it, but am glad to know that I am able to transfer the frame alone, if I get there.

If you decide to sell it, how much will you be asking? It has been on my list ever since I first fired one when they first came out. I once fired the entire 12 rnd mag all holes touching at 25 yards! Since then I thought the gun was magic, not that I could repeat it... Most accurate pistol I have ever fired.

I have an HK Tactical that I purchased prior to the 2000 ban.

Rather than register it, I had the threads on the barrel removed and the barrel re-blued.

Other than bragging rights, keeping the threads didn't seem to be worth the hassle. I'm not going to be able to purchase a suppressor in California. I could sell the used, unthreaded pistol to someone on Calguns for far more than it would cost me to get one brand new in a free state if I were ever to move (not to mention, I could buy another barrel as well).

Obviously, not everyone's going to agree with my decision. But this pistol is a shooter. And a heck of a lot of fun!
I haven't missed the threads at all.
