    Newbie question about Glock 19

    Hello all,

I am looking to purchase my first pistol and have been offered a "barely used" glock 19, I have tried it out and looked it over and there is barely any wear that I can discern, except for one area. The tip of the slide lock lever is worn, the black is worn through so there is shiny silver underneath. Is this a normal wear point for this type of gun? Should the slide lock show this much wear when the rest of the gun has very little wear at all. I am referring to the lever towards the rear that holds the slide open on empty, I am not sure of the correct name, either slide stop or slide lock I think.

    Thank you for your help.

That's normal wear with all Glocks.

Barely used is very subjective. However, if the previous owner was using the slide stop lever as a slide release, the finish could very well be worn off. Since it is so easy to exchange, it is also possible the original part was put on another Glock. Where are you located?

Finish wear is not a real good indication of how much use any gun has seen. I have seen Glock's that have had thousands of rounds through them that have little to no finish wear on them. I've also seen some that have been in and out of holsters, but fired very little that look like crap. As has been already mentioned that is a common spot of wear on most any pistol.

Learn from the mistakes others have made purchasing anything used, get it checked by someone who knows what to look for before you pass over your cash.

Make sure to do a function check and insure the slide will lock back on a empty mag.

Function check and field strip the gun to check for signs of wear.

Mine has almost 5K rounds and still looks great inside and out.

To me, if the gun functions well and the price is reasonable, it is a GO. Glocks tend to last a long time and parts are easy and cheap to replace when needed.

            Good luck!

Its a Glock. Enough said. I bought my 23c back in 2005. It was a retired range rental. Who knows how many thousands of rounds were put through it. Since I bought it it has had probably another 6000-7000 rounds fired through it. It is still running on 100% factory parts. Nothing has been changed. The rifling in the barrel is almost shot out but it still shoots just as good as guns I bought new that have less than 1000 rounds through them. It was my first pistol and if I had to sell everything it would be the last to go. Don't worry about a little finish wear. Its not that big of a deal.

Anymore, I only buy used glocks with visible wear for two reasons: they're cheaper and I'm going to wear the finish anyways. It doesn't affect the function one bit if there is a little wear here and there.

It's all been said already, but just check the frame and slide for cracks, and look at the rifling on the barrel. If it's significantly lower in price than a new G19, just go for it. Glocks are spartan in design, and really simple. Do a function check like others suggested, if it passes, you'll be fine. If there is something wrong, it will be cheap to fix. Glock's are very inexpensive guns.

+1 Normals wear, and if it bothers you enough the slide lock can be replaced for not much money.

You can't wear Glocks out unless you are a millionaire.

And be aware that there's no "rifling" in the traditional sense. It should look like this and it is not due to wear:

^^^ this is still considered rifling. It's polygonal rifling, not traditional. It still needs to be checked, just like a traditionally rifled barrel.
