My guess would be yes. As far as I can see, it's a 5" gun that is covered by model number.

Note that some S&W revolvers are listed by specific revision, like the 36-10, while others are only listed by model number, like the 327 (which is listed in a 2" barrel as well).

I am continually monitoring the approved list for this.

I held this gun at the recent SHOT Show. I want one. They say it _will_ be CA approved.

(What I really want is a 4" 627 in matte S/S with unfluted cylinder).

Why wouldn't this be covered under the 5" 327 listing? That's what it is, if a slightly specialized model... I would think an FFL could DROS it under that without being inaccurate.

I believe you are correct... on the 327TRR8 the internal barrel liner may not be stainless, and the cylinder is Stainless. On the regular 327 the cylinder is Ti, and the barrel liner is stainless.

These are all substantive noncosmetic differences requiring a complete new safety test and different entry in 'safe gun' database. The only changes that are really allowable are grips & sights (and perhaps coatings?)

                  It's approved!

A local brick and mortar (San Diego) just got one in. It feels really nice in hand! Though my preference in clearly with the pre-locks, I just may have to pick one up!

In case anyone is wondering, they were asking $1050. I've seen them on the net for about $940, but once you figure in shipping and extra "fees", you probably come out even. At that point your better off supporting the local shop and buying it from them.

Sounds like that dealer is DROS'ng the 327TRR8 as just a 5" 327, since only the 327's appear on the "safe" handgun list, definitly a no-no.............

Good or bad I've heard of a couple of dealers do this with other guns.

Does that mean that this dealer is illegally selling this gun, and if I buy it I'm breaking the law? I would think that S&W would know if one of it's guns not yet approved in CA made it into the state.

                            Yes.

The 5" 327TRR8 is a substantively different gun than the 5" 327. The materials are different. That requires a new drop test/certification. These differences are not merely a surface finish difference, or difference in grips.

If the dealer is selling a 327TRR8 thru non-PPT as a regular resale gun, he must be somehow overriding the list on his computer. He is actually in violation. (That's how I was sold an unapproved Springfield Armory 3.5" 1911 2 yrs ago - it had _just_ fallen off the list and was very similar to another near-identical model.)

Hmm, I don't think the dealer is necessarily overiding the list, more likely just selecting the 5" 327 from the drop down list and ignoring the Finish differences.
