    What is a single shot?

Referring to SS of the SSE, how does it work? Is it like an old style revolver that you have to cock the hammer back before you can pull the trigger?

Please read the Roster exemption memo I wrote back in summer 2011. It's searchable.

Also, think Thompson Contender for single-shot pistol

A single-shot pistol is NOT a single-action revolver, and the latter really can't be converted to the former [without great expensive work] or vice versa.

Sorry for the confusion but I'm not asking about the rule. I have no idea what single shot is being new to guns. So I'm curious how the mechanic works. Is it similar to SAO or totally different? If different, to what can you compare it to?
Again I apologize for the confusion and ignorance.

Only one bullet. Think of a pistol with a solid dummy mag, the only round is that in the chamber.

you basically block the magazine so it doesnt accept any rounds and you remove or fix the mag detach button. So in essence you have pistol which can only hold 1 in the chamber and the mag is fixed ... hence single shot .

Would an individual be committing a crime if he or she purchases said single shot pistol, and subsequently unblocks the magazine and restores mag detach button to its original functionality?

                No.

                SUMMARY:
The 'single shot exemption' or 'SSE' is an exception to California's Roster of Handguns. Guns in the SSE configuration may be sold in California, regardless of whether they are on the Roster. They must actually be safely functional, and must be capable of firing only one shot before reloading.

Once delivered to the buyer, the original parts may be re-installed and original functionality will be restored.

a single shot is when you just fire one round.
