Seems to me the wording of the bill effectively renders bullet buttons useless, and you would have to register an AR pistol as an AW.

This is just how I interpret what I have read, and is not based on.. well anything really.

SB374 primary focus was on semi-auto rifles.
However, a side effect of the proposed changes also effects semi-auto pistols and semi-auto shotguns.

The entire point of the rewording of the existing law is to eliminate the bullet button.

The bullet button is a magazine release device that turns a detachable magazine into a fixed magazine by requiring a tool to remove it. It is legal because it follows the letter of existing law.

They are changing the definition so that even though it requires a tool to remove it is still considered a detachable magazine because you do not have to remove the action and it is not permanently attached.

They now require you to disassemble the firearm action to remove the magazine and load it. Bullet button as it exists right now does not do that.

What I am not sure of however, is the answer to the OPs question. Does this definition only apply when talking about Centerfire Rifles or does it apply to Pistols and Shotguns as well? Why I am uncertain is the line "(d) For purposes of this section, the following definitions shall apply". Is that section talking solely about Semi-Auto Rifles or everything? I'm gonna need to reread the full bill a few dozen times.

"For the purpose of this section" = Section 1. Which is all of Penal Code 30515.
              Therefore...
The new "detachable magazine" definition applies to all semi-auto centerfire rifles, semi-auto pistols and semi-auto shotguns.

              As enrolled...
SECTION 1. Section 30515 of the Penal Code is amended to read:
              30515.
              (a) Notwithstanding Section 30510, “assault weapon” also means any of the following:
              (1) A semiautomatic centerfire rifle that does not have a fixed magazine with the capacity to accept no more than 10 rounds.
              (2) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has an overall length of less than 30 inches.
              (3) A semiautomatic pistol that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and any one of the following:
              (A) A threaded barrel, capable of accepting a flash suppressor, forward handgrip, or silencer.
              (B) A second handgrip.
              (C) A shroud that is attached to, or partially or completely encircles, the barrel that allows the bearer to fire the weapon without burning the bearer’s hand, except a slide that encloses the barrel.
              (D) The capacity to accept a detachable magazine at some location outside of the pistol grip.
              (4) A semiautomatic pistol with a fixed magazine that has the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds.
              (5) A semiautomatic shotgun that has both of the following:
              (A) A folding or telescoping stock.
              (B) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon, thumbhole stock, or vertical handgrip.
              (6) A semiautomatic shotgun that has the ability to accept a detachable magazine.
              (7) Any shotgun with a revolving cylinder.
              (d) For purposes of this section, the following definitions shall apply:
              (1) “Detachable magazine” means an ammunition feeding device that can be removed readily from the firearm without disassembly of the firearm action.
              (2) “Fixed magazine” means an ammunition feeding device contained in, or permanently attached to, a firearm in such a manner that the device cannot be removed without disassembly of the firearm action.

Thanks Quiet. I knew you'd be nice enough to do my homework for me.

Looks like I have some more guns to buy.

Either way, I just purchased a PLR-16 from out-of-state last week. I found a seller who was willing to install my bullet button and single shot bobsled and my FFL is receiving it as a single shot exempt (SSE) pistol.

I wasn't sure if SB 374 affected semi auto shotguns, I guess it does. What a bummer!

Interesting. Assuming this does apply to shotgun, doesn't this mean that all semi-auto shotguns are now affected? After all, with enough tools and heat, any one can remove a magazine tube from shotgun receiver.

                        .

Oh wow...What did I miss?! Ive been contemplating getting an AR style pistol or even an AR platform rifle within the next month. Is there a ban on the horizon? Ive been out of the firearms hobby since Senator Yee started with the war on BBs and Magmagnets

But then, a lot of people who aren't active on Calguns or even the 2A forum may not be well informed. SB374 was vetoed on 10/11 by Brown, so no "AW" ban of any type happening at this time in CA.

Awesome! Nope, was dead serious. Ive been away from the hobby for a bit and I guess this was the bill my friendly gun shop told me about that got vetoed. Great news, thanks again!
