I have a .44 DE that I have owned for about six years. It usually feeds and functions pretty well, but started having extraction failures nearly every round last week.
I quickly identified that the polymer extractor "spring" had degraded. I stripped the bolt and found a orangish-brown mass under the extractor that I assume was the polymer part. I searched this forum and others and found out about the spring rebuild kit. I also found the coil wire springs at Numrich.
Wouldn't a metal part may have a longer lifespan than a polymer one in this situation? It seems that the polymer chosen by Magnum Research is susceptible to deterioration by oils/lubes/solvents. To be honest, I didn't know there was a polymer part in the bolt, and probably would have been more careful with the hydrocarbons if I knew it was there.
Here's my question, is there a problem retrofitting the extractor spring with the coil wire one if your DE was originally manufactured with the polymer spring? Any information why MRI went away from the coil-wire springs here?
