    Sig P556 & Forearm Support/Buffertube

Looking for a AR15 type pistol and really like the Sig P556 SWAT w/ quad rails and forearm support.
My question is the Sig P556 with buffer tube and forearm support is 27.25" long, can I temporarily remove both the buffer tube and forearm support and configure the P556 like the older version using the plug and a single point sling for support for when I would like something shorter?

I believe this is possible and I am looking for confirmation.

    Thank you in advance!

I'm pretty sure it's possible. Actually it would be advisable. I'm not sure how the CA DOJ will view that arm brace despite the letter from the atf.
Do I look like I'm ready for homework?

ATF is ok with the brace, but it is likely that CA DOJ would consider it a stock on a P556.

The only reason DOJ tolerates pistol buffer tubes on ARs is that an AR pistol can't fire without the tube, unless major changes are made to the upper.

The P556 dosen't "need" the tube so likely DOJ wont like them.

If you have big money for lawyers, I wouldn't mind if you decided to become a teat case. After the lawyers take all your money and you prove yourself innocent of manufacturing a CA-defined SBR then I can buy one without worrying

But it comes from the factory in that configuration. It's not like you added the brace, and is marketed as a pistol. It would also be DROS'd as a pistol. Without any modifications on the user end, should be good to go.....right?

"Should" and "is" are quite different in CA. Just ask the Tannerite guy who got charged for using what he bought at the local store.

I understand what your saying. But if the pistol comes from the manufacturer in that configuration, without no modification what so ever. How could Cali DOJ find you at fault. The website shows it is sold as a pistol, plus ATF letter stating the brace is does not violate NFA. Just sad that you would get prosecuted for a legally acquired pistol, that has not been tampered with leaving the factory in its original configuration.

I'm not claiming anything is wrong - I would consider buying it myself.

The argument that "I bought it legally therefore it's legal" turned out not to be true just recently when another Calgunner bought Tannerite (exploding target) at the local CA store, completely legally and unassumingly, went to the desert, shot it and ended up criminally charged with the possession of an explosive device. Remember, he bought it at the local CA store and there are stores still selling it. So, when it comes to guns it's quite possible to buy something that turns out later to be illegal.

I'd go with the BATFE letter as an argument for legality before anything else.

CA DOJ is responsible for prosecuting CA laws. Where does CA law differ from Federal law concerning what is or is not a stock on a P556? Do you know of any CA law that would make the P556 with a brace a SBR in CA when it isn't under Federal as declared by the ATF?

Well it also comes from the factory listed as Not California Compliant. I personally wouldn't risk it unless I was disabled and actually needed it. The buffer tube itself may be ok since the gun comes with it. Sig no longer sells the p556 without buffer tube.

                    Guys,
                    Thanks for the comments.
I believe the CA non- compliance refers to be non- rostered and needing SSE as the original short version does. Arguably no difference in that regard.

I am just asking to confirm that it is physically able to remove the tube and forearm support and install the original plug and I am pretty certain now it is an option for the pistol.
Otherwise at 27.25" and 10" barrel I would be better served with my 18" barrel Tavor at 30.0625" long.

Sorry for derailing the thread OP. Should be no problem switching it out to regular pistol form without the brace. Personally, I would post it up on fleabay and recoup some money for it. As for the Tavor.....you lucky dog. I'm jealous, I've wanted one of those for a long time.

I'm referring to the argument that since it comes with the pistol then it must be legal. The sig pistols configuration does not have the legal feature requirement to be sold in CA. It wasn't vetted by the CA roster process. The SSE just gets around those requirements so you can't really use that as a reason why the brace is a legal California feature.

Anyways, I don't think sig sells the end plug by itself and may refuse to sell some parts to califonia. I don't know. But what you can use is this:

Shop rifle parts (2,667) at Brownells, including barrels, stocks, triggers, and bolt carriers to customize, repair, or upgrade your rifle’s performance.

                        here's another plug:

                        or maybe even this:

Conversion parts as received from SIG.
I have not even tried to remove the buffer tube so have no clue where the adapter plug fits....
