    S&W 500

    Well, I just took the plunge and put in jail my new S&W 500 with a 6.5 barrel. Can't wait till the 10 days is up! Now I gotta save up and get some ammo for her. Going to the gun show this weekend and see what they have there. Will report back with pics and after some (outdoor) range time.

    I was at an indoor range the other day and a guy in the booth next to me was shooting some ridiculously hot ammo through a 500. The noise and percussion were so bad me and like 5 other guys in booths around him stopped shooting and stepped back until he finished. I will say though, the guy couldn't shoot for sh*t... Don't be that guy

        Congrats! I have had the privilege to shoot one. Sheer power!

        Before shooting though, if this is your first time, look up some youtube videos regarding accidental double taps on S&W 500. The combination of recoil and light trigger makes it not unusual even to the experienced gun owners. The second shot is normally when the muzzle is up so kinda scary. Just a heads up so you can stay safe.

        Enjoy and let us know of your experience when it's out of jail. And start saving up for ammo. It's around $3 - $5 per round!

          Congrats! I'm not brave enough to handle such power.

            Recommend a shooting glove for your dominant hand, a weight lifters glove is fine too. Something to pad the soft tissue of your hand a bit. Start with the the lighter loads first to get used to things. Only load one at a time at first as you level up and learn to manage the recoil. Obviously like any revolver keep the fingers away from the cylinder gap, though the gun is so large it would be hard to get them that far forward!

            It's totally manageable and a great ride.

              I have had one for a year, I am in san jose as well. Taking it to indoor ranges is hilarious because everyone else stops what they are doing and walks over to see what just happened. I bought in bulk like 500 rounds of HSM hollow point 350 grain, haven't regretted it all. It was a big upfront cost, but you are going to save $2-3 a round from buying at LGS.

              I call it the friend maker because everyone else wants to shoot it

                  I got a chance to shoot one. Glad I got the chance to. But never would own one. To me its just not a comfortable gun to shoot.

                    I rent one at On Target about once per year for the novelty. I can barely get through 1 cylinder, both financially and pain-wise. It's like scraping your hand on the pavement with each shot. Even an experienced shooter like me has been known to anticipate a little too much on the later shots. But the spectators love it! My friends usually say they'll shoot, too, until they see it costs $4 per round and I'm shaking off the pain from my hand.

                        I just rechecked my order and it looks like they raised the prices. I paid $29.90 for 25 rounds plus shipping. Less than $1.50 to my door. Just received ammo yesterday. Maybe wait them out and see if it drops. PBRammo.com

                          Different caliber. 500 S&W != 50 AE.

                            too many windows open on the phone. They do have 50AE ammo as another member was inquiring about.
