Seems to me there are so many great 1911's out there right out of the box that theres not so much need to do build-ups from base pistols like was done in the past. From what I've read start with the pistols that have forged frames if you really want to build a custom. The RIA has a cast frame so that might not be the best starting point to build off of.NRA & CRPA member

You can get a Loaded and make it perform like a TRP after spending some $'s on it, but why? Just get a TRP from the get-go. Will be cheaper, too. Unless you dislike some TRP features.
I find that it is wiser to get the stuff you want already included vs adding them later on. The problem sometimes is you don't know what you want just yet.
Whatever you decide on, good luck. The tips from many folks above are really solid. One Way to Post Pics ********** How to Submit an iTrader Rating That Counts ********** Brass for Sale

Buy a TRP.
If you cant admire the looks of one or it's performance at the range, you have no business owning a firearm. The more prohibitions you have, the less virtuous people will be.
The more subsidies you have, the less self reliant people will be.

The 1911 may have been in wars for 100 years, but Masetro Bartolomeo Beretta was arming the world 400 years before John Browning was ever a wet dream.Comment

Agreed! It's an awesome choice for the price. Just make sure you handle one before you buy. The checkering on the front strap is extremely aggressive and some people don't like it.Comment

You can rent a low-end one to get a feel for it. But if you already love the TRP, with all it has to offer, no need to get a low-end one. Unless, again, you know exactly what you want and you are looking to modify it to your liking. If that's the case, the Loaded is a good base gun.One Way to Post Pics ********** How to Submit an iTrader Rating That Counts ********** Brass for Sale

Best bang for your buck under $600 = RIA 1911
Best bang for your buck under $1000 = Sig 1911
If you have the cash i would go for a Sig, ive owned many 1911's but the quality of the Sig blows me away every time. Get a target model and no modifications necessary.
If your prepared to spend the money on a dan wesson or a nighthawk, then i would go with a nighthawk. Actually, id get two or three Sigs and be much better offComment

No such thing as a 'Production, / Custom' 1911. See History 101. This is a slam-dunk question. How obvious does it have to be?
What was the Go-To 1911 in the 70s..Colt. What was the top drawer 1911 in the 80s...Colt, 90s...Colt 1911 unaltered. I wonder what it is today....hummmm.
When Lester & Bill & others retire...never mind.Comment

Don't listen to any advice here posted so far..
Go to your local brick and mortar store. See if they have anything on sale BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING!!!! Sometimes a store will clear out weapons to make room for new stock. I got my Custom II for $200 below MSRP a few years ago because they were clearing out the stock they had."Men sleep peacefully in their beds at night because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf."
