    XD9 or PPQ?

planning on getting a new 9mm. The gun is for me, but want something that the wife is comfortable shooting. Purchased a px4 earlier this year without trying it before buying and not totally happy with it. I have some carpel tunnel issues and the px4 bothers me after a while.

This time the wife and I went out and rented a bunch of guns and the XD9 came out on top for us.

One gun I have been really interested in is the PPQ.

So, I have narrowed my choices down to those two. The problem is iv'e never shot or held the PPQ.

Anyone who has shot both who can give me some insight? How do the grips compare?

Is the ppq worth the premium?

If you and your wife liked the XD9 get it. It is a fine pistol. Not my cup of tea due to the short trigger pull but I'll admit that my brothers has shot thousands of flawless rounds in his. I have large hands and prefer more meat but if you are looking for a pistol you and your wife can shoot look no more, XD is your pistol.

The PPQs trigger is as close to a 1911 as a striker fired pistol will ever achieve. For that reason alone id get it.Be warned,it's got some muzzle flip.

interesting - how does the muzzle flip compere to the XD - I thought the recoul and muzzle flip was pretty minimal for a poly gun.

this worries me a little thinking it might bother my hand issues/carpel tunnel

I shoot an XD (45 service) and wasn't really happy with the grip until I did a DIY reduction and stippling. That made it more secure for my shooting needs (drills and rain) and I'm really happy with it. Only quirk for me is the thumb on my non dominant hand rests on the take down lever and I don't really get a good purchase on it, but that is just how I personally hold the weapon. Trigger was tough at first but dramatically smoothed out after break in.

Have never shot or held the PPQ either, but I've never heard a bad thing about it. Considering extra costs/hassle of SSE with the PPQ I think the XD-9 with a bunch of ammo would be a better investment and then you and your wife could spend more time at the range enjoying it.

I used to own both XD9 and PPQ 9mm. I've never shot them together so I don't remember how the two were compared in muzzle flip. But if I recall the PPQ has higher bore axis and technically would resulted in more muzzle flip.

The PPQ is the superior weapon IMO. The XD9 is a good pistol but I'm willing to bet both you and your wife shoot the PPQ better. It is a little flippy but if you have a relaxed grip that's just fine - it will drop right back down dead center every single shot. A relaxed grip in general will probably help your carpel since the point isn't to control recoil, the point is to have the pistol return to center reliably. When you fight that you put strain on your joints.

Honestly though you need to find someone that will let you shoot the PPQ before you commit to an SSE. Make sure you get a chance to tryout all the backstraps - they can have a big impact on your groups and comfort. When you try them do it with live fire, not just testing out the feel alone. Let me know if you have more questions - if you lived up in the SF Bay Area I'd let you shoot mine.

You cannot go wrong with the PPQ. I've had both the 9mm & 40S&W. The
9MM is a dream to shot. From the factory the PPQ has the shortest trigger reset of any striker fired pistol.

It's always cocked. You're trigger pull is not used to cock the pistol because it's always in the cocked position.

I took a 2 day handgun class with Larry Vickers. He was running a PPQ and that when I became aware of it. He ran that gun and raved about it. If it's good enough for retired Delta Force Tier1 Operator.

It worth the premium. They do some very minor hand fitting a the factory between the barrel and the slide. That's awesome that Walther does that for a production gun.

Picked up an XD9 with the stainless slide in April this year and am very happy with it. Not one problem, shoots everything I feed it and feels very natural in my hand. Took it out to Frontsight/Las Vegas with me in May and it is now my primary SD weapon...

The PPQ is far better. The muzzle flip is not an issue in my opinion.

I thought the mag release was a push down type near the trigger guard like the HKs?

                            PPQ hands down.
Not much of a comparison IMHO

the push-down mag release is on the older PPQ version.
