I am a PA resident moving to CA on military orders. I would like a custom 7 in long slide 1911 built. First, is there any smith in CA that could do this? Second, if not, can I get the 1911 long slide frame into CA from Brownells? Or would I have to buy a 1911 in CA then send it to my smith in PA? Any help would be great. Thanks.

Correct. I'd recommend a Springfield Loaded as a base pistol. The milspec works, but if you're going to add a beavertail, material will need to be added to the frame, and the gun refinished.Comment

That's funny. When Chuck Rogers did my beavertail, he removed and reshaped, but didn't have to add anything.

The preceding statement was false.Comment

The full length dust cover rail makes a world of difference in the "when I run out of bullets I'm going to beat you to death with the pistol" look that causes bad guys to run in fear, and lesser men to feel inadequate. It looks just plain beastly and the extra heft up front does help manage recoil a bit better. Plus, an angel told me that when God called JMB to heaven it was to build him a full rail 1911!Comment

The best grip-safety for Springfields (& some Colts, Caspian frames) is the one from EGW. They started to make them w/ .220 radius:
Upgrade your pistol with premium, American-made 1911 parts and accessories from EGW. From precision ignition kits to magwells, find the best 1911 components here.
What was used before is the one from S&A:
Smith & Alexander - makers of the finest pistol parts in the world. S&A's parts have become the industry standard by which all others are judged.
These will NOT require material added to the frame, but will require a lot of hand-work to fit & blend, then to refinish.
Here's an Ed Brown fitted to a Kimber, then Ionbonded just to give you an idea of what the finished job would look like:
