They sing and dance and play all day?

Name the specific firearm you are thinking of putting a SS guide rod in and you might get better answers. I am guessing Glock.

      You talking fishing?!?!?!?!
Use the fuji SIC's or the Titanium nitiride... they are far superior than the SS guides!

They stain less than carbon steel ones.

They add more weight to the front of the gun.......and are shiny.

They are a tad heavier than aluminum, but a bit lighter than tungsten.

Have used them on 1911s. Only thing I observed is that it adds weight up front for slightly steadier hold. Original design didn't come with it. Complicates takedown.

If you have a SS 1911 and are anal about matching finishes...

No, I was looking at one for my p220, and then I was thinking about one for my p229, but then I thought, "why are you looking to spend money on something when you have no idea what it does?" I just thought I should find out. I'll probably just buy more ammo...

They add weight up front to reduce muzzle flip just that tiny amount. If you must have every competitive edge in something like IPSC, then I guess go for it.

They are supposed to keep the recoil spring from kinking up but I can't imagine they do much kinking in that little space. on a 1911 I have found then to be a complete pain in the *ss and I notice that the LAPD ordered their SIS pistols from Kimber with the short GI length guide rod, they told me, "to ease disassembly."

If I purchase a pistol and it has a plastic guide rod, I generally replace it with a steel one. CZ 75's are known for this, and I have several of that model in house here. I just don't care for plastic parts on a steel gun, that's all. More of a customer satisfaction, pride of ownership sort of thing. I doubt they "work" any better than the plastic rods but it was worth it to me to have a steel part in there.

There are a lot of people who like to replace stuff. These are the people who will put a spoiler on a microwave if you let them. For these folks, tungsten guide rods, solid stainless steel guide rods have been quite profitable for dealers.

A quality firearm from a military contract bidder is -extensively- tested before it reaches its final configuration. A host of issues are addressed, simulated, and conclusions revised. The Glock 19, SIG P228, or CZ 75B that you have in your holster has been proven to work time and again in all sorts of unpleasant situations.

By replacing things that don't need replacing, you are actually lowering the reliability factor of your firearm.

The principle is that it guides the recoil spring on a number of pistol designs to prevent spring bind or bind from crap getting into the action. Mostly seen on 1911's and Glocks.

On the 1911, the purists will say they are not needed, and in general are not. However, when running at the rates, durations and demands of competition shooters (IPSC, IDPA, et. al.) it's cheap insurance.

On Glocks, I swap out the factory captured rod for a SS rod for easy recoil spring changes when I'm tuning the gun to a particular load.

For those that states it complicates takedown, well, I suppose if you can't program a VCR, you'd consider it difficult. The only real downside is the means in which you want to take it down. Most use a cut paperclip. Others use the rod from Dawson Precision that doesn't require anything to take down the assembly.

In the end, it's personal preference.
