Purchased my first 1911

Hey guys, so yesterday I was at Turners and purchased a Sig Sauer 1911R .45 Black Nitron for $920. I just wanted to know what you guys think of it and if someone owns one how do you like it? This 1911 will be my HD and range gun for now. Some time next month I will be adding a Surefire X300 light on it and switching out the grips with some VZ grips. I felt like the wood ones that come on the sig are a bit to thick.

I also wanted to know what parts would I need to bring the trigger pull down to 3lbs for 5lbs?

Been wanting that gun, has good reviews only problem you will really find Is people won't say it's a true 1911 because the slide shape and the external extractor, I'm just waiting for tax season to fund me one myself let me know how you like it and how it shoots

+1, 1911 trigger jobs are NOT DIY projects. It's easily screwed up which can render the weapon unsafe so I suggest finding a gunsmith with plenty of real 1911 experience and not just any fly-by-night smith so that it's done right.

I had 1911's back in the 90's. I had Colts and Springfields.

1. Run a patch down the barrel to make sure it's clean.

2. Lube generously and shoot around 500 rounds. It will start to loosen up after shooting around 500 rounds.

3. Learn to properly clean after every range trip. 1911's like to be very clean, when compared to something like glocks.

4. Take it to a reputable gunsmith for a trigger job if you are still not happy.

Congrats on your purchase. I had a Sig 1911 with rail before and it performed well. No issues whatsoever when I had it. However, it felt a little bulky to me compared to my Kimber and realized that I was not shooting it as much. I ended up selling it and the new owner is very happy. I used the funds to purchase a different gun that fits me better. If the Sig fits you, it will bring you joy and peace of mind.

In regards to your planned trigger job, as many have pointed out, take it to a competent smith if you are not familiar with the process. It's not like an AR wherein you buy a "drop in" Geissele or Wilson Combat trigger and the pull is lightened to 3.5 lbs based on the trigger's specs. Most 1911's come stock with a 5-lb pull and in time (after about 1.5k shots or more), the trigger pull gets a bit lighter. This is based on my experience and from other 1911 owners whom I know. The contact points get polished and become smoother.

And as redcliff had pointed out, 4 lbs would be the lightest I would go for an HD gun. Anything lighter might just be too light that you pull the trigger too soon. At least for now until you master your gun. Once you master it, I am sure you will know what suits you best at that time and can make the necessary changes then.

Thanks for the advise guys. I think I'm going to shoot about 500+ rounds throug it then decide if I want the trigger job. I have a Geissele SSA on my AR15 and I love the 4.5lbs pull on it so you guys are right 3lbs is to light.

I also noticed the slide is was squared and not like the regular 1911 but I think that's what I liked most about it. It also does feel a bit bulky in my hand but I think it's because of the stock wood grips that come on it. I'll swap them out for some tin ones and see how that goes.

I have the same model. I have never had an issue with it, always shot 100% However as others have said, it is a bit bulky even with slim grips I put on. You just have to get used to it. Its diferent than my other 1911s.

When you guys say bulky are you guys referring to where hand is placed in the mag well? Aren't all 1911 singel stack and the same size where you would hold it from? With this Sig it fit perfectly in my hand the only thing that bitters me was my thumb was a bit short and did not reach the mag release well. If I would tilt the gun just a bit then my thumb would reach it. Can the mag release be installed on the right side or have an Abi mag release so if necessary I can use my index finger?
