I have a chance to pick up SW 686-3 Performance Center (Ported) revolver. Anything specific I should look for? Its used and it will go to the gunsmith for some cleaning/tuning before it will get to me.... Is it a good revolver? What would be fair price for it used?

SW 686-3 Performance Center question

686 is generally a great revolver. Check for loose cylinder and gap between the cylinder and barrel. Pricing is tough to determine without actually seeing the gun. I would consider anything less than 650 to be a good deal depending on condition. But who knows for sure on price. If you think it's a good deal then its a good deal . Post some pics if you get it.NRA Life Member -
Locally, anything less than about $850 would be a good deal here. $650 I would pick it up in a new york minute.Comment

Depends on which variation of performance center to determine value.Comment

Thats the kind of gun people spend years lusting after and still never get one. Anything below $800 and i wouldnt be able to resist, $650 its a steal.
Put the gun in full lockup by pulling the hammer all the way back, and releasing it forward with the trigger still pulled all the way to the rear. While its locked up, check the cylinder for play.
Take a good look at the forcing cone with the cylinder swung open, your looking for erosion and other signs of wear. Swing the cylinder shut again hold it sidways to the light, look for a sliver of light between the forcing cone and cylinder.
Test the action as well, if it looks good i would definately take it. What smithing work are you planning to have done and by who?Comment

I have a performance center 686 SSR (not ported barrel). I haven't shot many revolvers but of the ones that I have, I will rank this at the top. If yours is similar to mine, then I would say you will enjoy it and for $550 was a steal. The double action trigger is sweet!
Congrats and enjoy! Good idea to have a smith check it out to clean and tune it.One Way to Post Pics ********** How to Submit an iTrader Rating That Counts ********** Brass for Sale
