Thoughts on Steyr M9-A1?

As I am using the Glock 19 exclusive at the range, I'm consider Steyr M9-A1 as a second gun for home deference. This is partly due to the fact, it's so hard to get my hands on another Glock 19 these days...

- What's your thought on Styer and m9 specifically?
- What's the size comparison with the Glock 19?
- How easy is it to field strip it for basic cleaning?
- Is there any Bay Area range with Steyr for rent so I can test it out?
- Finally, how do I correctly pronounce "Steyr"?

And definitely pick one up. It's like what Glocks would have been if they were designed and mfg'd 20 years later.

I'm a huge fan or Austrian mfgs. I have a Glock pistol adn a Steyr rifle. The M9 is definitely a pistol on my "want" list.

Ive heard nothing but good about them if you can find one for sale. They were on back order for a long time but I have seen a few out there so that may not be true anymore

Doh! Say it ain't so! I hope it's not on back ordered (like the Glock).

I'll start calling local shops around to see if there's one I can check out in person....

But If I had a choice between a glock, XD, or other plastic guns, i'd get the Steyr M9. Very, very good looking gun and very comfortable. I've not fired it, but how bad can it be?

If I hear one more complaint about the dang trigger....I think all this trigger nonsense comes from glock fanboys who are intimidated by this firearm. I like it better than the glock...and a dang trigger job runs south of $100 if it really is bothersome.

Now, what is your beef with the trigger? Don't give me the typical "I just don't like it" or "it feels funny" or "it's a S&W semi, they all stink"

I've owned a Glock 19 since they were first sold here in the U.S. It's still one of my favorite handguns. However, of all the combat tupperware breed of hundguns, I've like the Steyr the most. It appears to be just as reliable as the Glock. Size wise, it's also very similar. I also prefer the sights on the Steyr. They work quite well. Very fast target acquisition.

Don't get me wrong, I like the M&P alot, I think it's a very well made gun with great ergonomics, but the trigger on my friend's M&P40 that I've fired quite a bit just feels way too heavy and inconsistent to me.

And I'm no Glock fanboy, as a matter of fact I strongly dislike them. If you haven't handled a Steyr though...actually just don't because it will ruin all other semi-cocked/safe action/striker fired pistols for you forever. It's very nearly perfect.

I want to keep all my new firearm purchases to American made. I'm sure it's a great gun, but I haven't even seen a shop that has em in stock.

Thanks for the input folks. I'll give Steyr a serious look.

Steyr M9-A1 does it seems like a post-modern (funny I know) version of the Glock 19 - which has all the qualities I am looking for... Found some video of field stripping online... It's pretty amazing stuff.

I just bought one today, $499 with two magazines (10rnd mags)
I tried dry firing it next to an XD, M&P, and Glock 19 before buying it and that sold me. Just holding it, the odd shape may turn you off, the grip angle is odd and the sights are weird but once you fondle it and try simulate it's use. You oddly find it, natural...and the trigger beats the other striker pistols.

Got mine from City Arms, if you want one GET ONE now before the price increase.

I think i may have bought their only 9mm though, but they still have the M40-A1

The M9A1 is on the top of my wants list. It's a shame CDNN won't ship the $339 Steyr MA1s to CA.

The Steyr M and S series were designed by former Austrian police officer, Wilhelm Bubits. He worked as a designer for Glock for many years before moving to Steyr Mannlicher in 1997.
