how much is too much?

Just curious as to how often most calguners clean their firearms after a day at the range. I seem to habitually clean mine after every outing. So, too much or am I not alone?

Depends on how often you shoot. If once a week, I usually wait three or four outings to clean rifles; or until the accuracy starts to fall off. With handguns, when they get too dirty or 500-700 rounds.

I think too often, guns are over cleaned to the point that they receive more wear from cleaning than shooting. YMMV

I clean mine every single time I go out, don't care if it was 50 rounds of 500 rounds. I use a grease lubricant on all my guns, so usually a quick wipe down of all surfaces and reapplication of grease covers getting all the residue off the moving parts. I value my guns too much to put them away dirty.

i used to clean every time after the range, but i got over that really fast, now i clean after 2 or 3 range sessions

I clean when either my guns stops working or stops being accurate, anything more than that is a waste of time.

My normal range stuff like Glock, AR & shotgun hasn't been cleaned for a while... like within the last 12-16 months. Dirt and powder residue doesn't hurt the gun, and I don't shoot corrosive stuff, so why clean it all the time.

Yeah, I was taught to clean your guns every time you shoot them,
but I am starting to think that might be overkill. Obviously some
people want to know the gun is totally clean and ready to go,
every time they pick it up. Regardless if it's for the range,
or home defense. If grime could potentially cause a jam,
or a misfire, you don't want that happening when it is
a matter of life or death. But I do wonder if the constant
cleaning is causing more wear and tear than is needed.
Especially if using metal brushes instead of plastic ones...
Even if it's a softer metal than steel, it still creates some
wear...

Just follow the factory recommendations or whatever your owner's manual says.

back when I only had 1 gun, I cleaned it after ever range trip. I think by the 4th or 5th trip, I managed to clean it so well that the red dots in the rear sight came right off. lol

Since then, I do fully cleanings only after 500-1000 rounds.
