Question: Purchase of Antique Non-Roster Handgun From Out of State

I want to purchase a handgun on Gunbroker.com from out of state. The handgun is not listed on the DOJ Roster of Handguns Certified for Sale in California. However, the handgun is over 50 years old. Other than not being on the roster, it does not have any other restricted features.

    How do I proceed?

    Thanks

It is exempt from roster requirements because it is C&R qualified, but it is required to be transferred through a CA FFL. Talk to a local FFL about receiving said handgun and they will probably charge you $50 plus DROS.

If it were an 'antique', it could be shipped to your door; pre 1899 I believe.

Yes, "antique" is pre-Jan. 1, 1899. However, that is the real Federal definition but I've had quite a few people refuse to sell an antique without a DROS if it "uses available ammunition." Lots of bad info about antiques has been spread by the CA DoJ over the years.

Be aware that many CA FFLs are unwilling to do C&R handgun transactions and many out-of-state sellers are unwilling to go to the trouble of doing sales to CA.

Much confusion and misinformation out there plus a bunch of folks with a strong "I don't want to take the risk..." mindset.
