Thoughts on P95

Years ago I traded my dad my 686 6" for his 70 series colt. I love the colt. But that 686!!! It's his HD gun. Just sits there most of he time. That 686 was an amazing shooter. And I miss it. Alot!!!

Was thinking of offering to buy him a 9 and get my smith back. Since its going to mostly sit it really doesn't require a sig (I love my 228. Old one too. West German. Awesome gun). Or even a glock. Since the ruger p95 is on roster I thought for the price and given ruger's CS that might be a good choice. He's not going to shoot it that often. I reload 9 as it is so shooting would be cheap and there's plenty of good SD ammo for the 9.

He's 75. Pretty healthy. Any feedback would be helpful. Thanks.

I have a dual tone with 250 rds through it.
Went bang every single time without a hickup.
It is kinda bulky but I like it.

Man, you must not like your dad if you are trying to swap him a P95 for a 686. Not that it isn't a good gun, but it is probably one of the ugliest guns Ruger has ever made. If you are dead set on it buy him something nicer. Sorry for being a bit dark, but think about the fact that in a few decades whatever you buy him will probably be yours again.

I would have to agree with drifter. Get him something nicer. If you want to stick with ruger get him an sr9 or get him a SIG 2022. Personally I would get the SIG just because its a SIG.

p95 isn't too bad. it goes bang when you need it to. only thing is that it's a pain to reassemble at times.

That's a good point. That's the kind of feedback I was looking for. I should probably get something a little nicer. Maybe I'll get him a glock. Although they are kinda ugly, no?

He never shoots the 686. He needs a gun for the home. I get that a basic 9mm pistol isn't even close to comparable to a 686. I will shoot the 686 and he'll still have a good gun for the house. That's all. I was wondering if the P95 is a decent gun or not. If its a decent shooter or not.

I agree with most. My dad is 76 and I wouldn't skimp to get him something nicer in his golden years. Funny how ugliness was mentioned about the P95, then a glock was a suggested option. The P89 was my 1st gun and it worked perfect. But as others mentioned, it's a bit bulky. Take ur time and good luck.

The P series Rugers are great firearms that always work, but are just ugly as hell. People just don't like the way they work.

In all fairness if you buy a $400 P95 and trade it to your dad for a solid 686 someone should call adult protective services and turn you in for elder abuse (jk). Unless you add 400-500 rounds of ammo and a few magazines extra.

I have a P85,89 and 95. All three are great, and ugly!

At ~$320 I like the P95, very nice break on the trigger, a mile of pre-travel though.
It's DA/SA and de-cocker/safety is on the slide, another thing I do not prefer.

Check out the striker fire for good quality alternatives, SR9, XD9, M&P9.

Honestly be fair, he traded a series 70 Colt (or 686 now)...at least return an all steel back.
CZ's are fairly cheap, or a BHP or another 1911

I agree with others. Don't trade a UGLY rugger p95 for a 686. If anything, get him something better.

The P95 is a very good gun. Its not even that ugly to me. I think glocks are way uglier. The Hi-point is also a ugly gun. However, I would just let him keep the revolver. If it just sits there, you can offer to check it for him every now and then, or just ask to take it to the range every once in a while. However, leave a different firearm with him for security.

Buy a P95 for your self. I think thats a good idea.

First thing you need to ask yourself is can he operate a semi auto with out any problems or would a revolver be better for him. Did you want the Colt or did he want the 686. You might think about getting him a Ruger GP100 unless he is looking to get a pistol then I would say the SR9 would be the way to go. All I can say is good luck getting that 686 away from him.
