Force yourself to like a Glock?

So I bought a Glock 17 a few yrs ago and sold it within a month because I couldn't hit a damn thing with it, I mean I was AWFUL with it. Looks of a Glock don't bother me, love the ease of takedown and rugedness, etc, but I could not hit a damn thing! So sold it and actually took quite a loss on it. Just didn't seem to have natural point of aim for me and I shoot my 1911's and Beretta 92 10x more accurately.
My intention is to NOT turn this into a Glock vs anti Glock thread. I am writing this because I am thinking of getting in my car in the next hour or so and driving to local Turners and buying a Glock 17 or 19!! Figured if you practice, like anything, you will improve (only issue though nowadays are ammo prices!, so does make more difficult to practice as much as would like, but still have decent stash).
Reason for giving Glock another try- I often take friends to the range who have not shot before and they LOVE it, also girlfriends seem to love to go to the range, they get serious rush (least my last two have, maybe I just been lucky). Back to point, I figured I want a 9mm that is low maintenance and don't have to worry about. If scratch it up etc no problem- would rather my friends scratch up and learn on my Glock than one of my more expensive 1911's or higher priced 9mm (Sig P226, etc). Glocks are meant to get kicked around!
And for myself, I am sure with some practice I can learn to shoot the Glock 19 or17 better and just love the ease of takedown and function. I'm not some end of world guy or anything but as an example- if I had less than 1 minute all of a sudden to throw a couple guns and ammo in a duffle bag along with food and water and "head to the mountains", as much as I LOVE my 1911 and multiple AR's, I would probably grab a Glock 9mm and my AK47 over those others. Don't have time to grab bunch of cleaning supplies, etc, just a bunch of mags and a couple guns thrown into a bag while getting out of dodge- my vote would be Glock 9mm and AK47.
I want to learn to like Glocks! and plan to go buy one soon, am I crazy given my first experience w not being able to hit broad side of a barn w my Glock 9mm years ago?
So assuming I go through with it, also asking your guys/gals opinion on G17 vs G19. I remember when bought first one, my hands aren't gigantic, but I am 6'5" so definitely not small hands, the G19 seemed a bit small so went for the G17. But for some reason I like the compactness of the G19 and seems to have a huge fanbase. Kind of a dumb question though- since I don't CCW, whatever feels better in my hand! Gonna go out and pick up a G19 or G17 later today unless somebody convinces me otherwise. Even if you hate them, shouldn't everybody at least own one Glock 9mm?

I "forced" myself to love a Glock ... the way I did it was I wanted to get a 10mm handgun that was reliable.

But to add to it, here is one other way.

I'm the exact same as you, Im not good with them, love everything about them on paper but when it comes to shooting them they're just meh to me. I understand the appeal just not for me. I did however like my g20sf just because it was 10mm, sold because I can't afford 10mm lol

Ill say it again Glocks aren't for everybody. You don't have to like every gun on the planet.

If you don't like the feel fit or look that's fine don't use it. It's not the end of the world. I personally love Glocks for many reasons. But there are other firearms people are just as passionate about I don't like. So I won't use them.

But personally if ou want to try a 19 I say go for it. For some reason 19s seem to shoot better for a lot of people. I too had to adjust a bit for the 17 to get in the bull compaired to the 19 which I shot quite well actually.

I agree that they are just not fore everyone. I just wish I could like them, cheap, reliable, simple, and moderately accurate.

It's interesting you say that CK_32, thanks for the feedback. I grew up shooting when was kid, just 22's and pellet guns. But I still remember when I was about 14yo (I am 40 yo now), my cousin and his friends took me to the mountains shooting. There was an LEO friend of theirs' with us and he had all sorts of firearms.

But my point is that they randomly gave me the Glock 19 for the day (my younger brother who was 11 yo at the time and was given a 6" 44 mg, forget the make, but needless to say he wasn't too accurate w that thing.) I remember being very accurate with that G19 handgun so, even though it was decades later when I bought the G17 that I ended up selling right away, I figured I didn't need to test fire first since I remembered loving that day I had shooting G19. So I guess Glock 19 it is!! maybe?!

Why not just look at the XD 9 or M&P 9? I find them to be excellent options for someone who doesn't find Glocks 100% to their liking.

I was kind of in the same boat… while I like Glocks, I just shoot the XD a lot better, with a lot less effort. Instead of forcing myself to like something just because they are very popular, I just stick to what works for me. I am not going to force myself to like something if there are other options that do the job better for me.

Since it is for other shooters more than you, I would say Glock is a decent choice. Glock ergos don't work well for me, but the volume of sales they do indicate that a large portion of the population thinks the ergonomics are just fine. Another option would be a 2022 Sig. Ergos you are used to for Glock prices.

My personal philosophy about Glocks, is if you choose Glock for self defense (home defense, CCW, etc), you should only shoot Glocks. I went down this path because there's nothing I trust more than their reliability and ruggedness. End of the world situation, I'm packing all my Glocks, mags and ammo.

Not to say that you shouldn't own other firearms, but if you want to be proficient, accurate and reliable with one, you should stick to them fairly monogamously. Glocks have a certain feel and angle that's just different from other pistols. I recently bought a G19 for home defense; I have a couple of them for this purpose, a G19 and 26 and they're stored in lock boxes. Now-a-days, I only shoot with my 19 and 26 so their feel and functioning is now second nature.

Will I ever shoot my other pistols again; sure. They just need to wait in line while I become 100% reliable and comfortable with my Glock.

So to respond to your situation, Yes, I forced myself to love my Glock because there's nothing I trust more. If it forces me to relearn a few shooting fundamentals, it's still worth it.

I can see how folks don't like Glocks. Before buying and selling guns get some training. When I was learning how to shoot I made the same mistakes. Hated Glocks because they were so "inaccurate", did not fit my hand well, point of aim was not to my liking. The more I shoot the less I find any of that matters. Fact of the matter is the equipment is 5% and shooter 95% of the reason they can't hit the target. Don't concentrate on hardware. It is a software problem you are having.

yes good point ExtremeX, there are other brands out there that I have never shot but certainly done my homework on, including Springfield XD and SW M&P. I'm just going off internet forums, but XD line seems to be quite a solid handgun. Regarding SW M&P, I used to love the idea until was reading few threads last night about unusual amount of jams (but have learned by now not to make choices based on internet chatter!), SW regular size M&P line has always intrigued me, anyone have a Shield looking to sell as well?!!

A software problem I am having rather than hardware, Ha!, I like the way you put that. Yes I 100% agree with all your guys' feedback and thank you for it. And yes Sig Pro is an option as well. When comes down to it, won't be my HD gun, just another 9mm to have at range and one I know will last "forever", so why not get one? Gonna head over right now, and money wise I don't feel too bad as I usually do when buying a firearm related purchase I don't absolutely need. Have bit of extra cash from selling my LWRC REPR last week!

^^^ Same reason I'm moving from Glock to M&P. Same natural point of aim, same grip angle as my 1911's, Beretta 92, CZ's, S&W 41, Ruger 22/45, etc., etc.

I get what you're saying with it not mattering but I disagree. Why would you, in a market saturated with choices, choose something that feels unnatural vs something that feels like an extention of you if they do the same thing? To clear things up I still hit the target when I shot one. They just don't feel natural in my hand, where m&p's, sigs, 1911's, berettas, cz's all do. It's not that glocks are inaccurate, I just don't shoot them as well as I do other pistols.
