    S&W Airweight: Age?

    I have a S&W 12-2 Airweight w/a 4" barrel in blue.
.38 Spl. Military & Police model w/fixed sights.
    All original brochure & box.
Mfd by Smith & Wesson, a Punta Gorda (?) Company.
    Ser.# 191XX.
Any idea when it was made?
I'm planning to give it to my lovely spouse for her peace of mind when I'm away.
    Simple; foolproof; light & effective.
    Thanks for your help.

    Ser.# 191XX.
Are you sure that's the serial number? Is that the number on the butt?
The serial number should have either a S or a C prefix.

Lemme know and I can nail down a date for you.
    /Chris

I have a perfect Burning Man attendance record: zero.

      That would be..Duh.

I introduced myself on this site as a knucklehead. Apparently that is still an accurate description.
The first # I gave ,19181, is on the inside of the cylinder swing-out hinge.
The # on the butt (the RIGHT one) is 2D71878.
I may be careening into the ditch on this learning curve, but I'll try to keep it on the road.
      Thanks for your help.

No worries; S&W stamps production and assembly numbers everywhere.

Ok so according to the 3rd Ed. Standard Catalog of S&W your Model 12 was made in 1970.
