    P6 ammo preferences

    I took my P6 out for another shoot today, this time with a variety of HP ammo. It shot my favorite defense load, WW 115 Silvertip, without a hitch. Very accurate as well. In fact, all of the various HP's in 115gr shot well. I tried some 147gr Hydra-shok, and had several FTF.

    It looks like as long as the HP bullet is close to a ball round in profile, it will work. The 147gr rounds are somewhat longer and seem to catch on the feed ramp.

    What year is your P6? Supposedly they changed the feed ramp sometime in the late 80's or early 90's. My 10/81 built P6 seems to feed 115gr JHP's okay.

      Mine's an 8/81. It will shoot 115's all day long without a hitch, either ball or HP.

        Mine is 12/83

        Eats 147gr Winchester White Box JHP fine, 115gr Remington JHP fine, feeds Speer 124gr +P, Golden Sabers and Hornady XTP.

        Seems to enjoy the Golden Sabers with amazing accuracy!

          I just shot a bunch of 115 gr white box hollow points out of mine tonight. 10/81, with no failures of any kind.

            All this talk about Calgunners pre 90's P6's shooting JHP without a hitch makes me think perhaps it was just bad springs that was cause the problems with other peoples and it just turned into a big rumor?

              I have no clue, mine's a 98 and it's devoured everything including 147 JHP subsonics. The g/f took hers home, so I haven't been able to do a side by side, although hers shot 115 and 124 grn JHPs with vigor.

              As far as the weak spring concept;
              I've seen and handled a dozen or so P6s and none of them show the kind of (shooting) wear that'd lead me to suspect any of them had shot out springs.

                  The date is stamped into the right (starboard) side of the slide as you would hold it to shoot, forward of the ejection port. It's "8/81" on mine.

                  As for the "spring crisis" I don't know that it's such an issue. The feeding problem with mine is caused by the angle of the ramp+long bullets. This is a non-issue for me since my P6 shoots my favorite 9mm defense load and ball flawlessly. The 147 Hydra-shok thing was just a test. I'm on approximately 300 rounds of 115gr thru my P6 with no stoppages.

                  I suppose that one could replace all the springs out of an abundance of caution, but I don't intend to do that with my P6. As my old Grandad said, "If it works, don't fix it."

                    Take a look at the slide by the front sight. You see in this pic the number stamped 9 78, that means it was built September of 1978.

                      Add the Cor-Bon 115 and 125gr JHP's to the list of things my P6 has consumed.

                      Only thing is, they seem to get stuck in the chamber if I hand rack it after chambering a round. Happens in my CZ too, so I'm guessing the case is a tad larger then normal 9mm rounds. I wish I had some digital calipers.
