M&P 9 full battery issue

My buddy just bought a bnib m&p9 and is having troubles with the slide not returning all the way. Doesn't matter if its sent with slide release or over hand.
Def not riding it home either of course. Is this common and if so anyone know the reason for this?

Did he recently disassemble / reassemble it? Can sometimes good that on certain pistols like with magazine disconnect so you have slide issues. Field strip it carefully and reassemble?

Does it not return every time it's released, or is it sporadic? Also, if he's had a chance to shoot it, does it also happen when it's cycled by recoil rather than by hand?

When my M&P9c was new and the springs were stiff, it had trouble cycling by recoil sometimes (but never by hand). It smoothed out a bit after a few hundred rounds.

It's sporadic for sure but happens a lotttt. When shooting too. He's had about 400 rounds thru her. Still funny. I wanna try some of the tw25b on the rails and maybe a diff spring, idk.

I'd have S&W take a look at it. They'll send him a mailing label and take care of it for him.

Can't tell from post if this happens with a round in the mag only or even empty. If it's fine without the round in the mag. Look at the ammo, high quality or reloads.

Otherwise as others said send it in for repair.

Happens with or without ammo in mag. Or with or without mag inserted. I'm thinking he should send it in. Might just be a factory flop. Shooting Winchester white box specials and cor Bon pow'r balls.

Its not common the M&Ps are very trouble free guns out of the box.
