1911 and Glock issues at range

I was using range factory-reloaded .45 ACP in my RIA 1911. Fed and fired everything fine, but sometimes on the last round on a couple magazines (Wilson Combat) the slide would rail to return to battery fully. A tap to the back would seat the round properly. Always the last round on the magazine.

Testing extractor when disassembled it seems to cling to a dummy round fine, and the gun fired and extracted fine without a magazine in. Everything else was perfect.

As for the Glock Which I recently replaced trigger housing in) I would sometimes not be able to squeeze trigger after trigger reset. It would reset fully but I would remove magazine and reinsert and it fired again. This seemed random.

    Any thoughts? Thanks

      1. What model Glock is it?
      2. Why did you replace the trigger housing?
      3. Is it a stock Glock trigger housing?
      4. What's the part number?

Do not tap the back of the slide when you get failure to go into battery. Release the mag eject the round.

If you have a failure to go into battery, the procedure is to:

            1. Hit back of slide to go into battery.
            2. If #1 fails, power stroke slide to eject chambered round and chamber the next round in the magazine.
            3. If #2 fails (slide stuck e.g. out of spec cartridge), hold top rear of slide with reaction hand and bump back of the grip to jar the round out. Or, you can punch the muzzle against the dirt or wood to break the slide loose (more of a combat scenario solution).

I'm in the middle of a Magpul advanced DVD course, and hitting the back of the slide is exactly the first thing they tell you to do.

Glock 23 converted to 9mm with G19 Extractor, Ejector and spring loaded bearing. Ejector is # 336.

I tapped back of slide very gently to seat round once, other times I released mag and gently ejected round, put it back in mag, reinserted and fired and would be fine and lock slide to rear. Never had this malfunction before maybe its the reloaded ammo being slightly out of spec? I could have had the malfunction in the middle of a magazine but pretty sure it was always last round.

Don't think so, was gripping round fine it just didnt chamber fully. Did the round test with gun disassembled and cartridge slides up into extractor and hangs snug if I shake slide around a bit but pops liose easily when I slide it up more.

Failure to feed the last round in a 1911 is usually a magazine problem. Was this a Wilson 47D magazine?

Yeah they've been flawless before and still relatively new. Maybe I put a spring in backwards hmm....

As cindynles so correctly mentioned, last round feed issues are typically magazine related on 1911's. The weak magazine spring can fail to force the last round up under the extractor hook, especially if the extractor tension is on the tight side.

A second issue, inertia feed can also occur. With inertia feed weak magazine springs (especially combined with worn recoil springs, or magazines which have been oiled internally) can cause the last round to slide forward as the pistol recoils out from under it due to inertia and it then is in front of the extractor hook, causing a failure to return to battery fully. If the problem reoccurs next range session try to see where the cartridge rim is in relationship to the extractor hook.

Unfortunately Wilson 47d's are known to have an overworked magazine spring due to the length of the magazine tube being on the short side for an 8 round magazine which then necessitates a spring that is too short that is compressed too much and wears rapidly. Tripp Research makes a conversion kit for them that reduces magazine capacity to 7 rounds with new follower and spring. 47d's can also suffer from feed lip spreading/cracking.

After 38 years of 1911 shooting with about every magazine type available I only purchase Tripp Research Cobra Mags or Chip McCormick Power Mag+ magazines if I want 8 round magazines. Wilson also now produces the ETM magazine to directly correct the deficiencies of the 47d magazine (read the description they have for the ETM some time and you can correlate the improvements they made with the problems that occur with the 47d). If I ran Wilson Combat I'd discontinue the 47d (along with their extended slide stop abominations). I'm sure the legion of 47d fans will now attempt to burn me at the stake, but they seriously need to try some of the other magazines mentioned and compare the quality.

Interesting. I recently bought an RIA 1911 that only came with 1 mag. While hunting for spares, I came across an ad for the WC ETMs on sale for $28 ea. Sounds like I should have bought more than 2.

I have less than 100 rounds total through it rotating between the 2 WC and 1 factory mag. The only issue I had was the steel follower of the factory mag slipping up over the slide lock on the last round. Not only did the slide fail to lock back, but the mag was stuck. I managed to free the mag easily enough and the problem hasn't repeated (yet).
