We're just trying to help. I mean CA is trying to come up with as many ways as possible for people to become prohibited and you don't want that to happen to you.

There were a lot of paranoid spazzo answers here. Sorry about that, seems a simple enough question with no risk to those answering. You do have the correct info about the process needed and asking a CYA question is never a bad idea. I would, however, remedy the situation ASAP. You don't wanna lose the few firearms rights we still have here in CA.

All of you on here seem to have the same answer for me, so I'm going to trust you all and do a PPT through an FFL even though I still don't fully understand all the laws that apply. I'm not a cop or a nark or whatever you guys are all paranoid of, just a regular dude looking for factual information that I can make sense of. I'm disappointed that only a few of you have believed me.
Actually, everybody believed you and that's why they are telling you to try to rectify the situation the best you can.

While we all know that the laws are very confusing and that more often than not the laws make no sense whatsoever, you have to remember that the ignorance of the law is no defense. If you ever got charged, you'd get convicted and you'd lose your gun rights. It's unfortunate, but it's also that simple. And the worst part is that you clearly have no intent to break the law and sound like a nice guy. That's the CA reality.

Actually they wouldn't be transfering ownership in the same way a person deeds a house, just documenting the sale or PPT. In theory an "original owner" could pop up and assert you have his gun. DROS doesn't, so far as I know, determine ownership in the same way as having title might a motor vehicle.

If you consider that CA DOJ is most interested in having the gun "on paper & in the system" then self-registration or the just going to an FFL option makes a certain amount of sense.

Without respect to the peculiarities of the aquisition, the grips show on this gun are "service stocks" and not the correct factory target type. I've owned a few Pythons and service stocks are usually found on the 2.5" barreled version. The correct factory target stocks, given 1977 manufacture, are checkered wood with gold medallions - the top edge of the checkering pattern would be straight, not the "half moon" type of the early 60's to mid - 70's manufacture Pythons. Overlap is possible, but 1977 seems a touch too late for the earlier version.

Proper factory target stocks run $250.00 to $350.00, depending on condition and how badly a person wants them. There are alot of fakes, many of them very good. Using a Tyler T Grip with the service stocks is a pretty good (and less expensive) alternative.

To some extent. More as 'cleanup' ... but there is sensitivity to folks intentionally buying a gun paper free then mailing in the VolReg and thinking that is an acceptable substitute.

Your friend just lost $1500-2000, so do him a favor and at least transfer it properly.

Thank you everyone for all the information. dfletcher - thanks for further explanation. The comparison of title with a car or property helped a lot because that was how I was thinking about it. It makes more sense now. And thanks for the grip info, I had noticed they looked different than others. I can't believe this gun is worth so much. My friend told me he thought it was worth about $900, that's why I bought it. Score!

It's not the people here being paranoid. It's a fact that law enforcement monitors this site, a lot are regular members here. You admitted to buying the gun without an FFL. UNDO that part quickly. People are just looking out for your freedom.

It has no cylinder ring and it appears new. Also, about how much is it worth? Thanks is advance for any help.

More like "I almost stole your gun discount". Could've gotten $1600+ for it.

Yes I paid $630. When my friend received the gun in the inheritance it was just one of hundreds of guns. I believe Cabela's took an inventory and assigned market values to each firearm and then bought the bulk of them, minus a few that were kept, and the full autos that went to an auction. (The total value of the lot was 2.1 million!) Somehow out of all that the value was established at $900 but the sale price was $630. I'm not sure of all the details, but that was basically what I understand to have happened.
