Just shoot it, don't sell it. EVER.

Just kidding, do your paperwork. The good it would do would be to transfer it legally. As oppose to, you know, illegally transferring a firearm.

You obtained the gun illegally, period. End of story.

Like someone already said, you and your friend who inherited the gun from his/her dad should go down to an FFL and conduct a PPT as required by law.

If you indeed purchased the gun for $630 then that is an amazing deal. Don't be an idiot and give the DOJ a reason to confiscate it from you and turn you into a prohibited person with loss of gun rights forever.

I'm getting really suspicious by first time posters asking these kinds of questions...

Please make sure you designate a friend to log in to CALGUNS and tell us how this story ends. I don't think they'll let you do it from jail. Look at the bright side....you'll be trading your $3000 gun for some quality time with Bubba and his friends.

I'll do the face to face transfer next time my friend is in town. It sounds like the majority of you agree on that. I still don't understand how someone who is not the registered owner (friend) can transfer ownership to someone else (me). I don't get it. Here is a picture though.

You mean face to face at an FFL, correct?

                  1) You're too young to know that "registration" is a relatively recent thing. MANY firearms in CA aren't "registered".
                  2) You better hope your "friend" doesn't do some research to see what a Python is worth. Especially here on CGN.

I don't post on here that often but I find it amazing when someone post a question and six different people post the same (but worded differently) answer and the OP wants to argue with them. If they don't like the answer maybe they asked the wrong question. Jmh observation.

Well, it's unlikely there is anything devious going on here, or surreptitious; after all, the OP has posted a nice photo of this Colt Python in question, and if you right click on that photo to "follow the link" it goes to his Photobucket page showing pictures of what appears to be his home, neighborhood, garage, trailer, ingenious tailgater BBQ rack (nicely done I must say), and a shot of the license plate on his truck.

Surely no huckster or libber would do that and then tell a less than genuine story. Nor would a tin-foil hatter be prone to do the same.

So I do believe his anecdote, even though his approach to the matter his full of naive and lack of concern for the law. Then again, it could be sheer genius. I would like to smite the laws in CA too with such brash bravado, but I have too much to lose.

You go Big Shane - way to show 'em!

                              1. It's generally illegal in CA to transfer/buy a gun from another person without the intervention of a CA FFL dealer,
                              paperwork and 10-day wait.

                              2. It's even more illegal FEDERALLY if those parties are from different states.

                              3. Is it legal to drive with 3 dead hookers in your trunk just because your taillights work & your reg tags are current?

                              4. Not only is there no privacy on the net, you've apparently used your real name on a board/forum monitored
by Calif DOJ, ATF and other agencies.

                              5. "...don't understand how someone who is not the registered owner (friend) can transfer ownership to someone else
                              (me). I don't get it. "

Nothing to 'get' Older guns may have legally crossed many owners before Jan 1991 were brought into CA & transferred
legally , unmediated by a CA FFL, before this date. And people may have moved into CA with unpapered handguns
before Jan 1998. I and tens of thousands of others legally own tons of guns which are not papered to me because of this.

Bottom line: you need to get the gun back to its owner. Then, assuming the owner is a CA resident, you can both go to a CA
FFL dealer and execute a 'private party transfer' (paperwork, $35 fee, background check, 10 day wait). If the owner is NOT
a CA resident, this handgun is not Rostered and you're SOL unless you can find a specialized FFL that can convert this gun to
a single-action revolver [thru removal of DA sear] and transfer it to you as a Roster-exempt dimensionally -compliant single
action revolver. After you pick up the gun after this style of transaction, you can reinsert the DA sear to recover double action
status. The person doing this DA->SA->DA conversion should NOT F***K IT UP and use proper hollow-ground screwdrivers.

All I've been trying to do on here is get correct information to go about this gun purchase the right way. I understand now that the way I've gone about it so far has been wrong. The last gun I bought was a Remington 11-87 when I was about 13 years old, so I technically didn't even buy that. All of you on here seem to have the same answer for me, so I'm going to trust you all and do a PPT through an FFL even though I still don't fully understand all the laws that apply. I'm not a cop or a nark or whatever you guys are all paranoid of, just a regular dude looking for factual information that I can make sense of. I'm disappointed that only a few of you have believed me. FYI that BBQ in my photobucket had caught on fire and was going to the dump until my idea to make it a tailgater. I refurbished he whole thing and did all the welding for my first welding project. I've only used it once in the last few years so if anyone wants it, I'll consider selling it.
