    What ammo for Sig 1911?

Hey guys and gals, I have a buddy who is not that experienced with pistols who ran out and bought a new Sig 1911 before I had a chance to counsel him against it. The worst part is that he bought because he is in a situation where he may actually have to use it defensively sometime soon...

Anyway, I have never owned a 1911 but I have shot them and am aware of their reputation for being finicky with HP ammo, which I understand varies from brand to brand. I want to know if anyone here has experience with this brand of 1911 and what defensive ammo shoots reliably through them. Preferably something on Dr. Roberts' list.

    Thanks in advance

I dont have a specific recommendation for what HP ammo to run, but from what Ive shot and heard myself 185gr is butter.

Before running any 185gr your going to have to probably run a few hundred rounds of 230gr. You gotta get her broken in 1st. At least my buddy had to do this with his Sig 1911 Scorpion...

      I'd stick with .45ACP.

Just havin fun! I've had great luck with federal HST, but in reality it should work just fine with most HP ammo. Only one way to know for sure is to buy a few boxes and test it out.

My Sig 1911 will feed anything I feed it, from my 200gr LSWC's target loads to 230gr XTP's +P SD loads, all with no problems.

On the commercial ammo front, I always found Federal HST, Winchester Ranger and Speer Gold Dots all excellent.

230 grain hardball works very well as a defensive round. It feeds reliably and packs a wallop.

he needs to shoot it, learn the gun and figure out what works best with that gun... I too have had hiccups here and there with some HP ammo.... but the more I fed one of my 1911s Hp the more it liked it....

also IMO even FMJ 45acp will do in a defense situation... its not a small caliber bullet...

HST would be a first choice of mine, along with Gold Dot, but I want to hear from people who actually have experience shooting them through one of these guns...

If you get a conversion kit, you can use Federal 38 grain hollow points. Otherwise, just stick to .45acp.

I have a Sig 1911, and it took about 500 rds to break her in to get rid of all the finnicky ammo issues, mine shoots Federal Hydrashok fine.

Every gun is different, but that said I run Remington Golden Saber in my 1911s 230g in the 4 and 5" guns and 185g in the 3". Functions great in all my 1911s.

Sorry, maybe I wasn't specific enough but the pistol is chambered in .45ACP and that is the caliber I am asking about

A Sig 1911 is a terrific pistol and a great buy; one of my absolute favorites in a non-custom 1911.

It should shoot anything commercially available. I use mine as my first-line defensive pistol, but also shoot it in competition. For personal defense, I have been using Federal P45HST2. Tests well, and shoots reliably, to point of aim.

                        Cheers,

Mine shoots Federal HydraShock well and Winchester PDX1.

My sig 1911 has a very tight fit from the factory. If I was going to use it for self defense I would clean and oil it then load it up. It seems to start getting a little sluggish when it gets really dirty. My kimber is looser and older and it doesn't care.
