    You could fill out this form, http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/forms/pdf/NLIP0308.pdf , and notify CA that you are no longer in possession of the handgun. That may be a good idea if the handgun was sold to an out-of-state customer and shipped to an out-of-state dealer for the required transfer, since they won't be able to update CA's records.

    Whereas, if you sold it another CA-resident and shipped it to CA FFL, you shouldn't need to file a NLIP since the CA DROS process should automatically update the CA registration lists.

    Federally, there is nothing you can do since there is no firearms registration Federally (except for NFA items).
