Full 10 round mag inserted with the slide forward?

Buddy and I at the range yesterday had an interesting discussion.
I have a G17 and a XD9. Normally at home I keep them loaded with 9 rounds loaded, mag inserted but empty chamber, slide is forward. Should the need arise I just have to rack the slide and I'm ready to fire, albeit with 9 rounds.
He also has a XD9 and he keeps his filled with 10 rounds but keeps his magazine out of the gun. He showed me that with the mag loaded to 10 rounds, slide forward that he can insert the full magazine with a little extra force and it will lock in, rack the slide, and fire. I tried it on both of my guns and it worked most of the time but sometimes the magazine would just fall out or I could pull the mag out with no real effort. To be fair, i felt like if I have to "jam" the mag in I might be damaging something in the gun so I didn't push the mag in as hard as he was.

Is it fine to load the full 10 round mag with a little extra force with the slide forward? With only 9 rounds, the magazines lock in with no extra force.

Aren't most handguns 10+1? I know my 1911 and USP can have mags with full capacity with the slide forward. It should be fine to store this way.

It's a TOOL... treat it like one. Load it to 10 and smack it in there, its not going to hurt anything. The brass of the round will give first before any steel on the gun.

After a while, your spring wil loosen up so that 10 rounds are easier to load and easier to smack into place.

I have several XD's. I found that the mags needed a little bump to get them to seat when the guns were newer. Your not going to hurt it by firmly seating the mags with 10 round in them.

With a G17 and an XD9, smack those mags in there and show it who's boss...There should be zero reliability issues with fully loaded mags. As NewbieDave eluded to above, the brass of a round will give far before any steel on the gun, so you really shouldn't worry about damaging anything in the gun. You have 2 combat weapons that can handle this without question.

you need to insert a full mag into your pistol and then hit it with your purse.. then it should go and lock all the way in!

              Couldn't that damage my purse?

              Thanks all.

I always keep a full 10 round mag inserted into my G17. It stays put just fine... no need to worry about spontaneous ejection.

When ready to fire, rack and squeeze, good to go.

I'm surprised by this question. I just assumed everyone shoves their fully loaded mags into the gun and then racks the slide. Why wouldn't you?

                        Wouldn't that be premature ejection?

                            I will now.
I bought 3 extra mags for each gun, the mags are all pretty new (average 50 rounds fired out of each) and when I tried to seat them full with the slide closed they wouldn't always seat all the way to hear/feel the "click" and they would sometimes slide out on their own. When at home taking 1 round out solved the issue. The last thing I would want in a HD situation would be to pick the gun up and have the mag drop free.
All of my range shooting up to this point, the full mags were loaded with the slide already locked back.
