    21st Birthday Recommendations

I'm turning 21 in August, and the first thing I plan to that day is buy a centerfire handgun. What is a good first handgun? Ammo pricewise, I'm leaning towards something in 9mm Para. But what?

A 9mm is a very good choice. I think a Sig would be a great B-Day present to yourself. If funds are a little tight, one of the used P6's that are coming from Germany would be something to look at.

    God....I wish I could remember being 21.

      Congrats on your b'day!!

First go buy yourself some beer, then go get a Glock 19.

Considering that you know enough to join a forum and ask questions, I'd say pretty much any handgun you want would be fine as a "first" handgun. Any problems or potential difficulty you might have with an "advanced" firearm could easily be solved by simply making another topic about the type of handgun you bought and asking for use/maintenance tips.

Have you looked at any handguns yet? What have you seen so far that strikes your fancy?

My budget is roughly $800 to $900. Say $900 max. I tentatively like the SIGs, and I've also thought about the Browning Hi-Power. A 1911 is a possibility, but I really would prefer 9mm.

With that budget, go with a SIG Sauer.

My first was a S&W 686. A revolver is great first handgun and a .357 gives you the versatility of two different loads. Don't get too hung up on your "first" cause in this hobby you'll never be happy with just one.

If you're set on the 9mm my vote goes for the Glock 17 or P226, hold em both and choose whatever feels best.

My advice to you is to shoot as many as you can and then make your decision. My personal favorites are Glock in 9mm and 1911's in 45 ACP (mine is a Kimber). My wife's M&P9 feels real nice and looks very promising but I haven't shot it yet.

Shooting first is very important. I thought about getting a HK USPc in 9mm. I rented 1 and took my G19 for comparison. I found out I really didn't like the the HK, saved myself $700+.

Happy Birthday, in advance, and enjoy your gift.

If you like to shoot get a used 45 and a relaoding press.

On my 21st birthday back in April I got a Springfield XD9. I really like it and everyone that has shot it liked it too. I found it at a local gun store for about $420 and I used the rest of the money I had saved up for a reloading press. I saved up about 800 dollars for my handgun. I of course went well over that amount buy the reloading press and components and magazines but it was well worth it. So make sure to budget in plenty of ammo.

As has been said many times, get the one that fits you. I would recommend trying a Glock 17. You'll even have some money to spare.

+1 on the XD-9, its a bit cheaper than the glock and i found that the grip on it was not as blocky as the glock either.
