I've heard the do-it-yourself bluing is never very satisfactory, although it's a lot better than the bluing "touch-up pens".Primary author of gunwiki.net - 'like' it on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Gunwiki/242578512591 to see whenever new content gets added! -
I would not try and blue a whole gun or even a slide. I would only do small parts like slide release, hammer, pins with the cheap bottled stuff. An uneven coat will show on large flat surfaces.

reblue
I have reblued parts not whole guns? il tell you what i do know, you have to clean the part extreemly well.then i put the part in boiling water, hot enough
so when you remove it the water on the pat will evaporate, then you blue it with the bottle stuff.all ways try to maintaine the same temp for all te parts your blueing..when you done oil everyhing...good luckComment

i've used Blue Wonder to reblue a magazine well I fitted to my 1911. It looks pretty good and matched the factory blue very well.Comment

cold blue sucks in all its forms.
at best, a cold blue job does not suck to look at from a distance.
it never looks good.
it offers no corrosion protection.
bluing is best done professionally.
you could rust blue at home, it's labor intensive, but rust blue is tough and looks great.
you can park at home too.
hard chrome on a mak? it doesn't get any more utilitarian than that. I would do it in a heartbeat.Comment

I'd gouge my eyes out before I tried to blue any of my High Standards.
I've had "okay" results from Blue Wonder. I tried it on a steel punch, but it started to rust after a couple of days. I found out I was using the wrong oil to wipe the finished part.
For utilitarian stuff, duracoat or gunkote. For "bling" stuff, I'd just send it out to have it re-blued.
I don't know how good Gunkote's blue looks, maybe I'll buy a small bottle to try out on some scrap metal.Comment
