    Sig P226 Grip Help

I generally have what I think is a fairly traditional grip. Thumbs forward and straight.

But on my 226, this puts my thumbs right on top of the slide release lever...which causes the slide to NOT lock open on the last round.

Anyone got any suggestions for this? I guess the obvious answer is to change me grip. But I like my grip.

I have the same issue. I primarily shoot a 1911, and I have that short coming when using my P226. The technique I was shown by a Sailor was to use your typical thumbs forward grip, take your strong hand thumb and wrap it behind your support hand thumb onto the top of your support hand.

Only option I have found is to ride my right thumb on top of my left hand. It's definitely something to get used to but it works well after a lot of practice.

Another option is to leave your grip as-is and use the trigger pull on an empty mag to check if you are flinching. Great way to improve your shooting.

Whatever you do, don't leave your thumb on the grip and ride your support hand over your thumb. Bad form...looks silly too.

Thought I as doing this too, till I realized my mags don't have a slide lock shelf on the follower. Got one of the American made mags and it locks open just fine.

I have the same problem, so I bought a P226 X-Five to see if having the thumb safety helps. My wife has the same problem with her P226, so we are switching to the M&P 9 for her.

Yup...exactly my problem. Too used to shooting 1911's. I seem to be resorting to a left thumb over right thumb grip to keep it off the lever.

Thank you for this. It was very interesting to hear his comments regarding thumb pressure against the weapon. Hadn't heard that before.

It is one of the counter-intuitive subtleties of handgun shooting. Most folks don't want to believe them, so you have to demonstrate the benefits...that is why personal instruction is better than watching a video clip

I do the same thing, left thumb over right thumb seems to be the best way to grip a sig. It's more consistent as well whether one-handed or shooting with both hands.

Two downsides to that if you are trying to shoot accurately and quickly.
                          1. It compromises the purchase of the left hand and has a negative influence on consistent muzzle flip
                          2. Locking the tight thumb down tempts the fingers to tighten as the trigger is pulled and the hand's pocket to close
