Self Defense .22

A 22 is certainly much better than nothing and an improvement over a sharp stick, bat etc. If that's all that will work for her then it will have to do.
I too would suggest a heavy 357 shooting 38's or a heavy nine. That extra weight really soaks up the recoil. Maybe even add a pachmyer (sp?) to also soak up some felt recoil.

.22 defense

I personally prefer the .45. But anyone claiming that a .22LR is useless, is at
best, deluded. I would get the Lady a Smith 617 or a Taurus. Let her get used
to firing it(lots of practice) And then move up to a.38 OR 9MM. IF SHE WANTS
TO! If not several well placed hyper velocity .22s will stop anyone except
King Kong on PCP. Also most felons are cowards and don't wear body armor.
What ever you do, don't let her get a snubbie. The .22 in a defensive role
needs all the velocity it can get!
