A lot of Model 10 parts interchange, but there are some differences over the years.

S&W made MILLIONS of these things, They are AWESOME!!

Here is my 1979 10-7 (along with my Colt DS). Not much difference between mine and yours. The grips are the "Magna" or service grips which is what you want to get. You can find the grips on Ebay.

the picture isn't the best but it looks more like a post war transitional model to me, I am going by the lack of an ejector knob, or at least that's the way it looks.

Quarter bore gunner gave you the straight dope. You have a pre model 10 s&w military and police .38 special.
It looks just like mine that was my dads service revolver. The number inside the revolver on the crane should match the number on the butt which is the serial number.

What you have is a Model of 1905 fourth change (called the Military and Police model) revolver that was made during WWII. The fact that it is chambered for the .38 S&W Special tells me that it was made for the US government. A great many were made for the British government and it's Commonwealth countries, but they are nearly all made in the .38 S&W (called the .38/200 by the Brits.)

The "V" prefix tells us that it was made around 1942 or so. The picture that you posted is too poor to really tell much about the gun.

It appears to be pretty well worn. but if it still has the original parkerized finish there is still some collector value in it. If it has been refinished it's value is solely as a shooter and it would be worth about $200 or so. The grips on it are as ugly as a mud fence and if it were mine I would replace them with something that isn't quite so homely.

I wondered about the V prefix, but (no offense to OP) wasn't sure if he was correct when he posted it so I went by the standard catalog serial number range, indicating an earlier 'born on' date.
